ALL of them better than Deep Cover
You're not wrong about the above films as superior to Deep Cover, and in my opinion, you're also not wrong re: non-comparative assessment of Deep Cover as a film.

That said, we have opinions, as do others. No more, no less. It's their money, not ours, plenty of other films in the Collection.

Beasts of No Nation is a surprise. I'm happy to see they're not only still releasing Netflix movies but digging deep in the Netflix back catalog. Though I've had Netflix for years and it didn't interest me to watch it.

I can't complain about the other choices. Glad to see Criterion is dedicated to releasing more documentaries. I wish there were five releases.

I think Mirror and Bringing Up Baby spoiled us. I think we'll constantly expect HUGE announcements like those each month and some will feel disappointed when it doesn't happen.

I'm surprised more people aren't excited about Ashes and Diamonds.

Is it that fewer people have seen it, or is it that my opinion is just that much more positive than everyone else's?

Because Ashes and Diamonds is an amazing movie. If you like Ivan's Childhood, it's right up your alley, sort of thing.

I’m excited, but also apprehensive. Why not upgrade all 3 from the set? I’ll probably buy it, but hope they get around to A Generation & Kanal.

I can’t emphasize how mediocre this movie is, compared to One False Move, etc.
The Glass Shield is one I’d love to see get the Criterion treatment

Anything from Kore-eda is worth watching. After Life is, in my opinion, one of his best. Nobody Knows is stunning.

So? Any given film can have a few hundred films that are better than it. That doesn't mean that the given film isn't worth anything. Most of the titles you listed are ones people are already familiar with, and have already been released on Blu-ray.

With Deep Cover, perhaps Criterion is saying, "Here's something we think is nifty that you might not know about." And the thing is, it doesn't matter if you think it's bad or "irrelevant". There's always going to be someone else who wants it.

For me, "Here's something we think is nifty that you might not know about," is one of the things I've loved about Criterion.

They market themselves this way:

"Browse our collection of the greatest films from around the world, available on Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming."

"Greatest films" is more than nifty. I think that creates a base of expectations for many people that precludes curios that may be sort of interesting.

I'm excited. Like Gacivory, it'd've been better if they upgraded the entire set, like they did with Rohmer's Six Moral Tales last year. Still, any Wajda is better than none. Outside of the virtually-impossible-to-get (at least, at a reasonable price) Masterpieces of Polish Cinema sets, only two of his films have been released on Blu-ray in the US.

I've been meaning to bite the bullet and try to import the dozen or so Wajda films released by Filmostrada in Poland, but other things always seem to get in the way. And I keep hoping that someone like Criterion or Second Run will see to it that I don't have to.

The only Wajda I have on BD is the Artificial Eye release of Katyn, and that is only because I randomly came across a used copy at a Bull Moose (of all places).

I keep almost importing Man of Marble Blu. I keep thinking someone else might get it.

Fair enough. But I think Criterion has released more than enough films that most people wouldn't consider among the "greatest" that anyone should take "greatest films" with a grain or two of salt. Even if we leave something like Armageddon aside, there are a lot of films in the Collection that are good, solid, worthwhile films that aren't even close to "greatest".

Anyone else think that this year of announcement has been underwhelming so far? The only purchase I’ve made was The Parallax View, was looking forward to Memories of Murder but the reviews for the new transfer made me reconsider.
