Egoyan said they had his films on Criterion Cast podcast.

How come it was only four titles this month? How often does that happen?

It should be in between pressings and not OOP... if you don't want to wait for the boxset that might be a few years away..(in the past VS has been good about saying what's going OOP before it happens, though can be slow to repress). Someone is also selling copies on amazon for a fairly reasonable price right now.

Not often. But this is certainly not the first time.

I'm speaking of this Vinegar Syndrome release. I'm not a steady customer of VS, but to my knowledge, when they sell out of a release it's no longer available and therefore out-of-print. Is that not the case here?

Generally speaking just the slipcovers and VSA releases are limited (they've had a few other limited releases in the past, but this wasn't one). In the rare cases they've lost the rights to films they've given notice but there have been a couple releases that where out of stock for a number of months before they got reprinted (though, that was likely due to COVID).

If it's not in this section: https://vinegarsyndrome.com/collections/sold-out-oop and should be back at some point.

That's helpful, though it does feel like they've just been in limbo on it in 2021, especially with a possible future release coming from CC. I clicked on some titles on the Sold Out/OOP list you shared and the titles still had the prices listed, but said "This product is out of stock" and "Sold Out". Sweet Sweetback has those noted as well, but doesn't even have a price listed anymore. Looks pretty dead.

Default R.I.P. Charles Grodin

Charles Grodin, Midnight Run and The Heartbreak Kid star, is dead at 86.

Here's a photo of him in Rosemary's Baby:

Ran (1985) got a trailer by Lionsgate recently. Sad that Criterion isn't releasing it but I'm still excited to finally own myself the new restoration for this (Not the best but would buy this over the old 2010 release any day). Hoping the Criterion supplements can be added into this release, especially the commentary and documentary. EDIT: There is no official announcement for a physical release, only digital sadly.

They have a two week gap with no releases. July 27th and August 3rd; this is according to their site release dates which I know is occasionally wrong. I'm thinking it's because they're doing double releases on July 6th and 13th, even though double releases isn't rare for them.

Unless there's some surprise releases they're holding back, I'm thinking it's just having a few films being completed earlier than expected so they were able to release them quicker.

[Show spoiler]
Maybe they're restocking less because of the pandemic for some reason, but they definitely restock sold out titles rather often. It's really only 100% OOP if it's on the list that the other person linked. They never restock slipcover editions though. Once those are gone, they're gone, even if the title doesn't go OOP.

Plus, they'll make an announcement if something is going OOP, not like Criterion.

Maybe your specific title is in limbo/negotiations though, who knows, I'm sure there's a lot of weird stuff like that too.

In case anyone was still wondering about the Xenon titles, the license has been renewed according to Lee Jones on Facebook. Troma titles have also been renewed, so the new Troma discs do not mean the VS ones are going away.
Thanks goes to hudson4k.

Can't decide if I want to support Criterion directly and order the discs I want from their online store, or buy from my local B&N and hopefully help keep their media dept doors open.

The former has 30% off right now, while the latter will (presumably) have 50% off in about a month from now.

The difference in sale prices, while significant, is not a dealbreaker for me.

Like many brick & mortar retail businesses, B&N's current situation is probably lot more precarious compared to Criterion.

I’ve been hoping that Criterion might release Real Life for years now. It would sit nicely with their other Albert Brooks films, and has a terrific performance from Charles Grodin. Hopefully someday soon, maybe even from Paramount.

After seeing his films suddenly drop on Netflix 5 years ago, complete with a Brooks promo video, I had hoped they were also being prepped for BD.

Don’t know if anyone’s mentioned it here. But I was listening to the podcast, The Dead Pixel. It has people that work at Criterion on it. They mentioned they are working on an upgrade of Blast of Silence. It’s on episode 2 if anyone wants to listen.

I have that release and I'll STILL get that Melvin van Peebles set, for certain.

That it also allegedly will include Mario's film about the making of "Sweetback", makes it even more alluring.

This is a very intriguing set, to be sure. I hope we're not talking five years from now, LOL. I hope it's out by the end of the year.
