Is anyone else a music nerd as much as they are a film nerd? I am in a big way, and feel like they can certainly go hand-in-hand. Always wondered.

I am waiting also, but i have gotten ship notices from them much later then this. Usually i get a notice but ups actually picks up tomorrow because it is too late for pick up tonight.

I'd consider myself a music nerd. Not like...a band geek, because I have absolutely no idea how to play an instrument or read sheet music. But I have many more albums than movies, and tend to listen to music a lot more often than watch films.

I listen to 1 song a day on average at most, so no, I am definitely not a music nerd.

Still waiting on my Modern Times to update. It's been almost three days now since I've gotten an update on the tracker.

Right, yeah, that's what I mean. I play a little bit, but I'm much more of a collector/listener. Good to hear!

Isn't it interesting how people aren't the same? It's a fascinating concept, for sure, how we can enjoy the majority of Criterion's output yet still have our own personal likes and interests without having to worry about what others think.

Agreed...if you look at my collection, about 1/4 Criterion and at least 1/4 animation...mostly classic animation. And if you included my DVDs and LDs, I might have more classic animation than just about anything else. Covering the silents of Felix the Cat and Koko the Clown all the to the WBs and Fleischers of the 40s. And I'm collecting as much WWII related as I can afford.

Latest non-Criterion deal/wishlist fulfilled. B & N had a one time/online 50% coup for use with a designated email account. I wound up getting Season 1 of the Twilight Zone for 50% off of a decently discounted price of $59.99 (much cheaper than Amazon currently). $32.46 after taxes for a 5 BD disc set...pretty good!

I still can't believe that UPS doesn't do deliveries on Black Friday. What is the deal with that?!

I'm not sure, are you going to delete my post if I tell you, you can? It will be un-CG of me and my loving fans out there that think I'm just in this to tell off the blu-ray fans and how there Hollywood likings suck.

I know this is the Criterion thread, but do you honestly not know the director of Juno? I like Jason Reitman movies, hip or not.

Edit: I just learned a couple pages back that his dad has a movie in the Criterion Collection.

Well, I did not expect to come into this thread this evening and find talk about Napoleon Dynamite and Juno. Both movies I love, incidentally. Not surprised that they're being talked disparagingly about... and also not surprise at the random voice in support of them. Funny how the world works in Criterion thread-land.

As far as Wes Anderson--I can take him or leave him. With the exception of Fantastic Mr. Fox, which I view as a masterpiece. (But I was always a fan of the book--one of my favorites growing up.)

For as much as we like to think of Criterion as being a company that licenses only quality films without being driven by the economic side of things, that just isn't realistic. We're obviously not privy to how much individual films cost to license, I think Wes Anderson films have found the sweet-spot that just makes sense for Criterion. Comparing license cost and the ensuing amount of sales of Anderson films to Godard or Bergman would probably show Anderson films to be more profitable. So even if you don't like Wes Anderson (a very valid opinion), view their addition to the Criterion collection and the money they make from them as financing some of the less popular--but perhaps more deserving--titles.

Well said, should of put my "Oh and the only reason they do, is because hip teens buy crap. Who is the hip director these days? Hmmmm..... " in a better way for 30+ years olds to not quote me for talking about teens.

Hey look - I'm sure your opinions about teens' tastes have validity... You're a lot closer to their age than I am! (and I don't say that as a put-down - you have quite sophisticated tastes for your tender age ). And I don't doubt that a lot of young folk are exposed to little else than crap movies and TV - but the implied 'crapness' of Wes Anderson is nothing compared to the dross that's out there.

For all of the Wes Anderson bashers here, which other current American filmmaker do you think deserves to be part of the Criterion collection (that would fit in with the collection)? Soderbergh? They've already released three films by him. How about Malick? Oh yeah... they've released two of his films as well.

I would like to see the works of Darren Aronosfsky, Alexander Payne, David Lynch, and Paul Thomas Anderson released by Criterion, but in all likeliness that's just not possible (outside of maybe Alexander Payne). The studios (or filmmakers in the case of Lynch) want to hold onto their films and release them.

It's clearly evident that Anderson's collection of films share many themes with the collection, and it's obvious that Anderson was largely influenced by many of the directors that Criterion has recognized. I can't remember where I read it, but I'm pretty sure Anderson once said his film school were the supplemental features from Criterion's video/laserdisc releases.

Plus, Anderson's Criterion releases sell like hotcakes (although I really don't think too many hip teenagers are buying his films in droves). You can't blame Criterion for wanting to make enough money to keep themselves afloat in the downward spiral of the home video market. Without Wes Anderson and some of the other popular releases that get whined about, Criterion probably wouldn't be able to release quite a few of the lesser-known films that people appreciate.

Age has basically nothing to do with taste. Back in my teen years, me and my friends were all about the Bergman and the Fellini. I didn't get into Godard for years to come, but I remember my friends making Breathless jokes. Personally, my mainstays were Woody Allen and Bob Dylan, and reading up on their influences kept me busy and pretty well versed, generally speaking. And before that, I taped Seven Samurai off PBS no later than 12 years old. Me and my friends couldn't have been the only ones.

People resent the young for a number of reasons, mostly because they aren't young anymore. I don't know how old anyone is in this thread, and I don't care. I only judge them by what they are saying, and which end it is coming out of.

I am a colossal music junkie. I used to think I had a large cd collection, but since digital music exploded, my iTunes library is pretty substantial. (somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 gigs) If you haven't gone poking around the music blogs for all the out of print LP rips then, you are either missing out or saving yourself from a bottomless pit of timesink.

And don't get me started on instruments...

Dvdbeaver looks like an average myspace page. Rather than trying to navigate it, just type "dvdbeaver moviename" in google.

I ordered 5 BD's from B&N and membership (free for two months), which came out to about 106 after tax. Later I received a 15% off all coupon in the email, but it wouldn't work online. I printed, brought it to a brick & mortar, and got another 2 BD's for 33.

It might be too late of a tip now, but could be useful in the future. Buy 1-2 discs to quality for trial membership then wait for a weekly coupon to clear your wishlist.
