That was kind of the whole point of Modern Times; the fear of mechanization. I think it was kind of brilliant to show a fear of machines by having them create sounds, but the humans cannot. The only human voices are those that are created by machines (like the Boss on the Videophoneamagraphoscope thing).

Probably the most brilliant use of sound in the early years.

Anyone of those waiting for shipping confirmation from B & N (Beta, greekak229, etc.) hear anything?

Not trying to be mean, but I received my BBS set via UPS this morning (according to my wife). Looks like it moved more quickly than I thought. Started in Sparks, Nevada and ended up in Poughkeepsie, NY early this morning. I'll let you know what shape it's in, when I have a chance to take a look at it.

I hope you guys get solace very soon...I know how frustrating the wait can be.

i think Chaplin's true silent films are his best films. but it doesn't lessen the impact of Chaplin, the first auteur (arguably of course) even before the term was coined.

i happened to land at the scene where the boss yelled at Chaplin to get back to work. this film is *STILL RELEVANT* today in 2010

Chaplin=

i can't wait for 1921's 'The Kid' to come. it's my favorite Chaplin still.
I'd say D.W. Griffith and I don't think it is arguable. Griffith thought of films as art when they were still being played with vaudeville acts. Of course Chaplin would be right up there. Just look at United Artists (Griffith, Chaplin, Pickford and Fairbanks), there are your original auteurs.

Agreed on The Kid. The print is fabulous and it is a lovely film.

That's good news on yours. As of 1:30 today, I have not heard anything about my package since the 21st. The mail came already today and still no Modern Times, so I can only hope for a separate UPS delivery sometime soon. If not, then I dunno. I'd really like not to buy it again, considering I got it for $20. I did email UPS about the problem, so hopefully they can make some sense out of this. I look forward to shopping with Amazon again because I've never had a problem with them. Maybe this is just an f-up on UPS' part, but either way, I'm kinda ticked.

I did pick up The Magician today, and might go back for The Thin Red Line later this weekend.

Ahhh, just pre-ordered Videodrome on Amazon, expected to be here Day 1. Great feeling.

It took 10 days for one of my B&N orders to finally arrive and the tracking didn't get updated once. That was through DHL/USPS though. I guess that is fine, since I saved quite a bit with the sale.

Agreed as well...my favorite Chaplin. The last scene(s) in both it and City Lights never fail to get me "all choked up".

Good for you greek!...You'll enjoy them both! The Thin Red Line got me almost as emotionally involved as Paris, Texas. Very draining, but in a good way.

Good luck with your shipping scenario.

Like I said before, I didn't get into The Thin Red Line when I watched it sometime ago, but I absolutely love Paris, Texas, so hopefully if I get TTRL, I might think differently after viewing it again. As a fellow great-film Blu-Ray lover, I appreciate the concern on my shipping.

Meanie. Yellow Meanie.
Totally off-topic, but I was talking to someone last week about Poughkeepsie (ok she's originally from NY so it's not that outrageous )

Completely off topic, but The Poughkeepsie Tapes STILL isn't on DVD. Haha.

No problem...I drive my wife crazy as it is, when something does ship and I have to wait for it. Your scenario would drive me absolutely crazy!

TTRL is first-most a visual delight...it's got an anti-war slant to it, but does it differently than Paths Of Glory. It's a LONG film, so either take frequent bathroom breaks and/or set aside the time needed. To each his own, but I think you'll enjoy it!

Lotsa love for you as well Beta...I hope you get the shipping remedied!

Lots of history in Dutchess County...especially Poughkeepsie.

Hey greek...believe it or not, I've never heard of "The Poughkeepsie Tapes". What is it?

It's a low-budget serial-killer horror film shot in a documentary style. Very bizarre. I saw it awhile back online. It came out in, like, 5 theaters and it's never been put on DVD.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1010271/

MAYBE CRITERION MIGHT CONSIDER PUTTING IT OUT.

Griffith. Chaplin was the first to sell himself.

Anybody here on Mubi? I finally started a new profile there (working on it). Under "Fav Films" I don't want to crowd that up so what I'll do is list my top 10 favs of that time and change it when I feel needed to. Under "Ratings" is where all of my favs are (so I won't rate movies I dislike, so no hating.).
