I like Notorious a lot. I own the Criterion releases of both Notorious and Rebecca and both are amazing films. I'm a bit of a casual Hitchcock fan at this point, especially the early stuff when he first came to Hollywood and got noticed by the Academy right away.

It may be worth it to consider the Criterion version of Notorious. It's a new 4K scan by Disney and Criterion. The special features may whet you appetite also. As always, Criterion does an exceptional job on special features, if you are into the supplemental aspect of releases. Something to consider.

I'm hoping it's a director whose movies haven't already been released by Criterion or are OOP. I'm tired of double-dipping.

All the Ray, Kurosawa and Chaplin films are available individually. With the exception of a few titles those collections are complete for me.

I would like to buy a Cronenberg film. I like The Fly and A history of violence. I have also seen Videodrome and Eastern Promises, which were ok...

I guess I am looking for something good & less weird.

So Crash, Scanners or something else?

Stopped in at the local B&N just to find the store closed. They now open two hours later. As if I'm going to wait in the parking lot until it opens. Good thing Amazon is matching the prices. I guess that's what we are supposed to do. Order from Amazon.

I'm gonna say that one's on you. Today's a federal holiday; it's pretty normal for most businesses to be closed or have holiday hours.

Then I think it's Scanners for you, which has a more straightforward storyline like The Fly and in a way an important precursor to contemporary mainstream superhero/psychic movies such as the X-Men series.

Then maybe The Brood, a violent but clinical meditation on his own bitter divorce through his characteristic body-horror imagery.

On the contrary, maybe you should avoid The Naked Lunch or Crash, at least for now. I strongly believe that they are two of his masterpieces, especially the latter, but if you thought Videodrome just okay and too weird, then I guess you wouldn't be that satisfied with them.

Crash is significantly weird. If you don't like the weird stuff in Cronenberg films then most of the Criterion releases won't appeal to you, and you're better off looking at his post-2000 output.

Agreed. A History of Violence and Eastern Promises are significantly more approachable than a good hunk of his catalogue. The Dead Zone as well.

On the Cronenberg topic, I also liked A Dangerous Method too.

I haven't seen Cosmopolis yet, but I know the soundtrack is superb.

I watched Seconds yesterday. Howes cinematography is just something else. This movie feels a little underrepresented today. Besides the forums nobody talks about it, and funny but sad is, it’s so relevant today. I enjoyed it so much that I just bought the Region B Eureka just so that I can pass it around to my mates

I did a second (hopefully final) order, sadly again I’m forced to order at Amazon since I’m in Germany. Went for:

In case you haven't bought or watched it, the Criterion release of Sweet Smell of Success has a fascinating 22-minute documentary where James Wong Howe offers a masterclass on film lighting. The film itself is one of the quintessential film noirs from the old Hollywood and I believe the cover art by the British comic book artist Sean Phillips is still one of the best from the label. (Arrow released the region B Blu-ray which has its own merit but doesn't have the James Wong Howe masterclass.)

And make sure you have a box of Kleenex near you when you watch Make Way for Tomorrow. (no spoiler in the video below, just one Orson Welles quote and one anecdote about perhaps the swagest moment in the entire history of Academy Awards)

Actually I wanted to get the three Scorsese World Cinema Boxsets but Amazon won’t let me have it. Now I’ve got 12 titles from my wishlist plus Smooth Talk, Memories of Murder, Throne of Blood and Purple Noon. I’ve bought MoM because every time I see it I remember the excited Bong Joon-ho in the Criterion closet and I only got the DVD. I know about the reviews but I like the movie enough to maybe double dip. Throne of Blood I wanted to pass because of the possible Boxset, but I’ve got a Tony Stella print of General Washizu on my wall, and his eyes haunting me every day to finally watch it on BD. Last time I saw it was 10 years ago on DVD. And Smooth Talk and Purple Noon are impulsive buys

Thank you! So much I want to say, so little my English is

You pushed a lot of buttons there. I got Sweet Smell of Sucess, actually it was one of my very first Criterion BDs. It’s one of my very favorite movies, one of my favorite Noirs and Noir is also my favorite Genre. And to top it of, I love Comics and Sean Phillips/Ed Brubaker are my favorite (modern) comic creators. Plenty of favorites there. But, to my shame, I think I never watched the James Wong Howe Masterclass extra on the disc. So thank you so much, I’ll watch it definitely tonight!

I discovered Make way for tomorrow only recently after I watched It happened on Fifth Avenue from Warner Archive, what a wonderful movie this is!, and searched for more movies with Victor Moore. If it’s that sad maybe I need to watch 5th Avenue afterwards again

It makes for a great pairing with The Face of Another by Hiroshi Teshigahara, also on the Criterion label, but not as yet out on blu-ray anywhere.
