Spotted this on slickdeals. Amazon, and apparently iTunes as well has several Criterion Samurai films for $7.99 to purchase.
Here's the list (there are probably more) Harakiri Seven Samurai Hidden Fortress Rashomon Sanjuro Yojimbo Throne of Blood Lady Snowblood Lone Wolf and Cub series The Sword of Doom Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman 1: Tale of Zatoichi Samurai Trilogy Part 1: Musashi Miyamoto Samurai Trilogy Part 2: Duel at Ichijoji Temple Samurai Trilogy Part 3: Duel at Ganryu Island Not Criterion, but Ran in 4K/UHD is also $7.99 to purchase https://www.amazon.com/Ran-4K-UHD-Ta...t-video&sr=1-2 |

That’s what I am leaning towards. Do you have the set? If so, how did you/have you been watching the films? Random, chronological or the included Film Festival order?

That would be awesome. I think it may be a little shocking for those that haven't seen Shintaro Katsu outside of Zatoichi, but the films are so entertaining. Kind of regret not getting the DVD set from Eureka. I wonder if there are any HD masters of this available for licensing? I don't think the films have been released on BD in Japan yet, unless I missed it.

Once they release Hanzo the Razor series, it would also be the first film directed by Yasuzo Masumura to get into the collection. With Arrow Video putting out Masumura titles nonstop for the past few months, I do hope the rest of his works get released in America, especially Lullaby of the Earth, which has been on my watchlist for a while.

I chose to watch it in chronological order, having already seen a few of his classics prior. It worked fine for me, but for others it might be a bit discouraging to trudge through the early works (which I enjoy) wondering where the genius is.

Unfortunately I can confirm that there are playback issues with World of Wong Kar Wai. I just got hit while watching Days of being Wild. About 1 hour in the playback starts freezing and pixilating like its having trouble with the encoding. I've reached out to Criterion. I suggest anyone having similar issues reach out to them as well so they take it seriously.

The Bergman set is the bigger bang for your buck by far. I am partial to Ingmar Bergman though; I like a number of Fellini's films and enjoy the extravagance, but I connect with Bergman's work more. It's far more understated and moodier, which, for whatever reason, appeals more to my sensibilities. In some ways, it's like comparing apples and oranges.
