I picked up my BBS from my PO Box tonight. In true Barnes & Noble fashion, they used a box that was a couple mm's too small, so the packaging is undamaged, but everything is bowed out of shape a bit.

I was lucky to pick it up at 70 bucks, so I'm not complaining. I little time and rebending will have everything looking nice again.

Now the question is what to watch first. I've probably seen Head have a dozen times (I went through a period as a child pretty obsessed with The Monkees). I wonder how it holds up with some historical perspective.

People resent the young for a number of reasons, mostly because they aren't young anymore. I don't know how old anyone is in this thread, and I don't care. I only judge them by what they are saying, and which end it is coming out of.
Yes, I would have to agree with you about age having little to do with taste. I think I should have said that his awareness of a diverse range of cinema was pretty good for a young person. And I certainly don't resent the young - I remain young at heart despite my advancing years... I just worry that many young folks don't get exposed to or to appreciate the wonderful cinema treasures out there (and that goes for music, literature as well). I am trying to do what I can within my own sphere, starting with my two kids...

Easy Rider or Five Easy Pieces (it should be an "easy" decision)

Am I the youngest frequent visitor to this thread at 19? I dunno. It seems like young people like me do not favor "boring" films like the ones Criterion has to offer, but I absolutely love 'em.

Had an e-mail waiting for me tonight when I got home from work that mine had shipped today by UPS. Hopefully I'll have it in my grubby little hands no latter than Monday.

Gonna watch "Withnail and I" tonite, never seen that one but I'm a sucker for a good ol' British film, and it's on the BFI top 100 list!
Amazon (despite having prime) sent me a delay notice for Withnail And I

I started watching Criterion films at 19. (around 98-99) A few of them I hated at the time but I've enjoyed many of those more as I've gotten older. My friends WILL NOT sit through 95% of the Criterion dvd or BR catalog.

Do you already have the Criterion DVD edition of Withnail? I usually sell or trade in my DVD editions when I upgrade to their blu-ray counterpart. However, when I got the new blu-ray, I switched the DVD case of my Criterion DVD with an empty two disc case and placed both the Criterion DVD and Image blu-ray together.

The blu-ray definitely has the better PQ, and it's anamorphic, but I still prefer Criterion's artwork. Also, the Criterion release has a few special features that aren't available on the blu release.

This also allowed the OCD part of me to keep "Withnail and I" on my Criterion rack (which I'll try to take a picture of sometime soon to show you guys).

Yeah, I hear you. My friends think I'm an idiot, really, for liking Criterions or old films, but I could really care less. Being in college thus far as shown me that people my age, truly, are just so goddamn stupid.

For me, Five Easy Pieces is the superior of those two, by a long shot. King of Marvin Gardens is a very interesting film too. I haven't seem all of the films in the BBS set, but the real standout for me would have to be The Last Picture Show - a brilliant film.

Not liking certain films doesn't make you an idiot..... not giving films a chance because they aren't in English, or aren't in color might make you a bit ignorant..... but I'd even say that just because you don't like films that aren't in color, doesn't make you an idiot.... perhaps that person sees film as a certain type of entertainment, and would rather read Melville than watch B&W films

(sorry that was a tangent) What I wanted to say, was this changes for many people with age, but for many it doesn't...... I have one buddy whom I often trade film recommendations with..... sometimes I'll meet him out for a drink, and he's telling me about the latest Netflix discovery before I can even sit down. I have FAR MORE friends in their 30's to 40's who would rather tell me about South Park episodes they have seen recently (nothing against the show, but I had a roommate in college in 1998 who watched it religiously, and I have never watched it since) than to even consider watching a film that isn't a big hollywood blockbuster.....

I love popcorn flicks too........ If it entertains me, then it's served it's purpose

Well I've never met someone my age with the same interest or taste in film that I have, which goes to show that my generation and culture like nothing more, really, than stupid action films with no plot. Plot is pretty much non-existent with all my friends and everyone I've met that are my age. I think that really says something.

I don't know..... she's probably right.....

My college days exposed me to more "new" things outside of my comfort zone than any other time in my life...... There are so many people with various interests, I can't believe you haven't come across anyone who enjoys these types of films, let-alone some "super-brain" with an encyclopedic knowledge of film.....

Contact Amazon. That happened to a buddy and he reported it. Amazon gave him a $10 credit.

I'm trying to build my Criterion Blu-ray library. Lately I have bought:

Modern Times
Charade
Hunger
Bigger Than Life

...and I already have the first Blu-ray release of 'The Third Man'. I also just bought 'Walkabout' on eBay for $19 even and free shipping new/sealed. And just ordered 'M' and 'The Seventh Seal' all on Blu from Amazon for $22.49 a piece.

I also already have in SDVD 'Magnificent Obsession', 'Written on the Wind' and 'All That Heaven Allows'.
