100% on board for Citizen Kane, Mulholland Drive, Menace II Society & The Piano.

My OCD is gonna be in overdrive with these though cos they're not gonna match the rest of the Criterion line, unless they somehow manage to keep the old clear cases instead of adopting the standard black UHD cases.
Very small gripe though. Super stoked Criterion are going 4K. I guess this eliminates the whole region lock thing on these titles.

I just hope they retain the same packaging and artwork for films that have previously been released on blu ray. I'd hate to have to replace my beautiful digipak of Seven Samurai with a boring keep case. Or have some of the great cover art replaced for the sake of selling new copies.

I bet they'll make new artwork, the artwork better top the previous releases or be just as good.

Except that's not what it says.

It says select films will have Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

Likely HDR10 as the base layer while select films will be presented in Dolby Vision.

I hate digipaks, so I would be happy with a plastic case. Are there any black cases as nice as the current clear Blu-ray case they’re using?

I'd say they should stick with the clear cases. Just cause it's 4K doesn't mean the case has to be black

I'd expect them to re-use the same art and just add the HDR/UHD sticker.

We just broke into song here in Gotham, raising a glass at the Old Town Bar, and you're welcome to join:

I'll bet you five you're not alive
If you don't know his name.
What is his name?
It's Charlie Kane.
He doesn't like that Mister
He likes good old Charlie Kane.

Then they'll just look like DVD cases

I like the aesthetic of clear cases, it looks very classy. I plan to switch all my blus in regular blue cases to clear eventually.

I never complained about 4k releases myself because I'm waiting for 16k 🤣
It's awesome news for the rest of us who are excited by this long-awaited announcement that they don't care about your suggestions or wildly uninformed conjecture about the format and the business that they've successfully run for decades.

I don't think a release should be based up because of the packaging.

That being said, though, I don't see why Criterion can't simply put discs into a plastic case and call it a day. There have been enough reports to choke a horse regarding how damage prone their DigiPacks and vanity packagings are.

Just arrived at the party...

Good for Criterion taking the plunge. I'll be especially interested in how they present Citizen Kane, The Red Shoes, and Mulholland Drive - and will likely give them a whirl at some point. After that, I'll probably mirror my current 4K buying; when it's a favourite film that significantly benefits from the treatment, or a title I don't yet have on BD and the UHD looks like the best option.

As well, to me, this simply means that Criterion is stretched thin, putting money, time, and effort into re-releasing movies that already look fine on Blu Ray, rather than transferring their old DVDs to Blu Ray, which really does make a big difference in the quality. More people working on Citizen Kane means fewer people working on Trouble in Paradise, as I see it.

Welcome the all-streaming future, is the real message, I think.

Once again, just my two cents.
Yep, great points. It will suck balls if I have to buy a combo release of The Piano when the Blu is all I want or need. I already own great Blu-ray editions of all the others and have no plans to upgrade. And it would be a tragedy if something like Trouble in Paradise got lost in this fiasco.

I'm glad that Criterion is releasing Menace II Society. I hope they will release Dead Presidents next.

Criterion need to lower the MSRP they're using on Blu-ray disc and DVD for their 4K UHD+BD combination packs now. At least all are titles not released by other companies so Criterion didn't shoot themselves in both feet.
