Mulholland Drive is basically a TV pilot, so I’m not expecting the 4K to look that much better than the Blu-ray. But now I gotta buy a PS5 just to watch 4K movies

Ha. Meanwhile I'm pissed at still having to pay for a sub-par bluray and special features I don't want since all I really care about is these movies looking as close as possible to their original prints, which they now should.

Bottom line is that this is great news for film enthusiasts.

Could we get a Kurosawa box set announcement tomorrow?

Stray Dog, The Bad Sleep Well, Drunken Angel, The Lower Depths, (The Quiet Duel)... I don't care about UHD.

People having been begging Criterion to go to 4K and the moment they do it's "It better not be a combo pack", "If prices go up a lot of people are moving to streaming". It's all the same thing anytime something like this happens: beg, receive, complain on repeat.
The people who wanted Criterion to go 4K are not the same who are unhappy about possible increases.

As one in the latter camp, I don't care about 4K, just how it'll impact future releases (pricing and if they'll be dual format) and DVD upgrades.

Kino and Criterion are apples and oranges anyway. Kino releases 20 titles a month and don't worry about restoration. Criterion releases 5, maybe 6. Now with a few of those taken up by 4K titles, clearly this'll impact their blu ray output, especially given the attention each individual title receives.

Look at Arrow, too. Now their announcements are dominated by 4K upgrades with just a few new blu releases sneaking through. It changes things as they try to balance focus. Not all bad, sure, but change for sure.

Arrow and Kino have far superior compression compared to Criterion. Criterion needs to take this chance by upping their game. At least Arrow offer all supplementary features on their 4K UHD disc releases, with again, great compression.
Criterion really don't need to release titles already on the format which are available from other companies. That'd be far too idiotic and it's great they're rereleasing titles they used to have way back on Laserdisc.

Now, if the Blu-Ray/UHD sells for what the Blu-Ray sells for now there will be no problems. But if the combo sells for more you're going to have a large group of unhappy people, just like they did when they made the DVD/Blu-Ray combo, which was subsequently withdrawn.
I'm glad they're going UHD for those who want it but, yeah, I'm in the "oh-oh, how much will this raise the cost for BD only buyers if the UHD and BD are packaged together" crowd. I'm single and on a a fixed income so extra money almost doesn't exist. Each month I usually only have between $40-50 of splurge money, and that's pushing it. When B&N has their 50% off sales it allows me to at least grab two titles. This year I grabbed five because I purposely kept some extra money from the stimulus check for the sale. If it goes up to $50, but especially $60, grabbing one title will be my only option.

On 4K from other companies who already released a title on 4K. Which Criterion doesn't need to since they'd be wasting their time.
Criterion also needs to lower their MSRP for 4K+BD sets along with BD and DVD, drastically, if they're to remain relevant.

Because only a handful will shell out for a 4k player and more expensive discs, but blu ray is already established and has a fighting chance of surviving.

You may disagree with that, but it's an argument.

I'd really doubt they would announce a big box set literally the day after their biggest announcement in years.
