Would've loved to see, say, a Bergman or Fellini film on the initial slate of releases, but very happy we're getting superior, more diverse fare than is currently available on 4k.

Can the blu ray of The Red Shoes be improved upon? Asking for a friend.

I have the ITV Blu-ray of The Red Shoes, from the UK, which is the same scan. But I think so. HDR should make the early Technicolor colors a little less pasty and improve darks.

Maybe pasty isn't the right word. But I kind of doubt some of it should look quite like this:

It's already very good on Blu-ray, though.

Amazing freaking news! I'm in for Citizen Kane, Red Shoes, and Mulholland Drive.

I'm not sure about the other two, but I may just say screw it and purchase them anyway.

Oh my God, Red Shoes in all its Technicolor glory in DV? If it's anything like Wizard of Oz, I am going to poop myself.

In our household, it was my wife who bought the snow globe editions. No danger of them being decluttered here!

I keep reading this thread and thinking I'm reading a thread from when Criterion first announced they were starting to release films on BR.

The sky was falling then, too. Too expensive, not better quality, who has one of those new fangled players, why would I upgrade my collection, in my day we watched 8mm prints from the library after hiking up hill in the show ten miles in bare feet.

For my own part, I'm glad we finally have a format with greater dynamic range than the original camera negatives of classic films. I don't seek remasters that goose up the original dynamic range, but at least now the medium can support the full dynamic range present in the originals. BR couldn't capture it all without compressing it a bit.

And I'm glad we finally have a format that can capture all the colors in the original camera negatives, rather than the incomplete coverage offered by traditional blu-ray.

I'm not saying BR can't look great. I'm just glad to see we'll have a format which fully capture the source.

I have the Ingmar Bergman collection on order for 50% off but I can cancel. Is this a release that we are likely to see from them in 4K? I don't want to waste a $150.

I imagine that, at best, within the next 2 years we might get one Bergman in 4K (The Seventh Seal, most likely their best seller of his work). I highly doubt the other 38 movies will ever see 4K physical releases.

So, if you consider that a complete waste, then go ahead and cancel.

Does the 'Coming Soon' section on the website appear to be inverted for anyone else? It used to be the newest announcements (in this case being October's titles) that were on the top line but now it's August titles that appear at the top. It might mean nothing but I find it a bit strange that it would automatically do this now.

Most of the movies in the Bergman collection were scanned in 2K, I think. It's safe. They may release some individually on 4K, but I highly doubt the whole or even most of the collection will be upgraded. Most of them just aren't that well known or appreciated.

But I'm more hesitant about some movies on my wishlist now too. Was just looking at my B&N account and wondering if I should delete anything.

I recommend buying it. Even if 4 or 5 films from the set go UHD it's a good deal.

Just click the arrow icon to have it go in descending order.

I’m surprised Sex Lies and Videotape wasn’t announced since it’s getting a 4K in France, I believe. Soderbergh even had Criterion prepare it with HDR to “future proof” but unless another label (Kino?) snagged 4K rights I’m sure this will be coming eventually from Criterion.

I know that but I thought it was just strange they would change the order it was in and was just wondering if anyone else was seeing it that way. Maybe they are just doing some site maintenance or maybe they are planning to announce something today?

Does anyone know if the upcoming (and seemingly delayed) Hitchcock's Spellbound was scanned in 4K? I wonder if that one will get a UHD release when they finally release it.

That might be, but whatever they do they probably have to do something different to help identify them, since the Blu-rays from Criterion don't use the blu ray logo on the spine or front. Right now you can easily differentiate the DVD's from the Blu's in store because of the size difference, but for 4k they'll have to figure something else out.
