Just out of curiosity, and slightly off-topic, how much have you guys been spending on standalone UHD players? I was hoping to spend somewhere in the 180-220 Euro range when I get around to it. Panasonic players seem to be in that price range, although the Sony is around 350, which is bit more than I want to spend on the player alone.

I was also hoping to find a UHD player that's region free for "regular" blu-ray, but that could be costly. I guess when the time comes I'll just watch Region A discs via my laptop and it's external optical drive with an HDMI cable connected to the TV.

It's the Sony, heard plenty of people had the same issue.

Only happens with 4K discs from what I noticed, when I used it as my main Blu-ray player pre 4K TV it ran those fine.

It is. Region-free modded UHD players are $300+, while region-free modded BD players are around $99-$120. My solution was to buy a region-free BD player to complement my region-A locked UHD player. It depends on how important a single-box solution is to you.

Alright, well like I said, in that case I'll probably just connect my laptop to the TV with an HDMI cable to watch 1080p blu-rays from another region. This is what I do now in fact. I don't have a set top box blu-ray player.

Also, I'm guessing I won't "need" to buy 4K Criterions of films I already have on 4K from another region when the time comes, such as Don't Look Now and Le Circle Rouge.

I did similar but in reverse: I have a region B UHD player (Panasonic UB300) and a US-bought region A Samsung BD player. This latter turns out to not be a great machine, but I can watch my US Criterions on the Panny with the top menu trick

Anyone having trouble playing movies on the Criterion Channel app? Movies play fine from a web browser but I get error -6 on Roku and error 15 on the iOS app.

I'm not saying BR can't look great. I'm just glad to see we'll have a format which fully capture the source.

Wow, I just saw the news! Criterion goes 4K! Who woulda dreamed it?? I will have to double dip Citizen Kane, The Red Shoes and Mulholland Drive. The Red Shoes ought to be a feast for the senses. Scorsese must be giddy. For the times, they are a-changin' ♪♬♪♬♬♪♬

Well, I guess it won't be funny now that I have to explain it, but it was meant to be an ironic response to the quote I posted above it rather than the quote you had actually replied to. I was trying to satirize the members here who always seem to be negative toward changes in the status quo, particularly in technology and so called upgrading. The quote about the superiority of 4K was countered by your quote in an effort to poke fun at the naysayers who might think that 4K is a silly and crazy idea. It was not to poke fun at you or nathan_h.

Oh well, I own up to my failure to provide a bold message in a humorous way and as penance I will watch a VHS tape recorded in the EP mode from Goodtimes.

Normally wouldn't post another company's release news here, but I know there are a ton of Samurai films here and it's not like we are getting a ton of releases. Info was found by MifuneFan that AnimEigo is going to release Sword of Desperation in December. This is easily one of the best Samurai films to come out in the last 20 years. If you're a fan of Samurai/Kurosawa films I HIGHLY suggest checking this film out.

I love all animals (mostly better than people!), but cat persons are a special, wonderful breed and never fail to earn my accolades and respect.

This whole discussion of 4k blu-ray players that are region-free greatly interests me.

I just discovered that Oppo no longer is making blu-ray players any longer. I was all excited to see they made a 4k player (OPPO UDP-203) until I saw it was discontinued (same for the UDP-205 too).

Is there a 1 player solution that combines pristine 4k playback AND the ability to play region-free regular blu-rays? Luckily 4k blu-ray discs are all region-free so that is a relief.

I'm guessing this isn't the case, since Oppo was my go-to solution until they left the business.

Lots of options. My only recommendation: do not get an extended warranty because any region-free mods are post-consumer and nobody will touch it, as the manufacturer warranty is invalidated. Found that out the hard eat

I saw the Sony X700 listed as a region-free UHD player, but the unit came out in 2016... so its a bit old. Also I'm worried that all the Sony players freeze up as I read. I might go with Panasonic though. Too bad their highly touted Panasonic DP-UB820 Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray Player isn't region-free.
