This is one of Criterion's best months in a long time to me. Grabbing Kane and OUATIC for sure Day 1. Others later.

Good point!

I’m definitely in for both Citizen Kane and Mulholland Dr. (upgrade).

Thoughts on the Kane cover? Personally, I expected that poster they used to announce the 4K UHD titles. But I guess it is what it is, unless they pull another Tree of Life cover situation.

That said, looks like an amazing release overall.
My first reaction to that cover was meh but the more I looked at it I now see its significance. Criterion's first 4K disc and of course the huge "K" for Kane. Now I'm warming up to that cover.

Seems like their UHD releases will be region-free!
I told everyone the BDA wouldn't stand Criterion going rogue on UHDBD. Still doesn't say the BDs in their UHDBD sets won't be region-locked, however -- especially since there will still be separate BD releases.

Incidentally, though Kane is top-billed it won't drop till 11/23 along with Menace II Society. Mulholland Dr. 4K drops 11/16 so it will officially be Criterion's first UHDBD. They also aren't resetting their spine numbers: Mulholland Dr. remains Spine 779, Kane is Spine 1104, Menace II Society is Spine 1105.

Now do you have to see Menace I Society before you see Menace II Society?

Also glad to see they aren't resetting the Spine Numbers. I thought that would've been dumb.

grateful that they are going to UHD, but part of me remains disappointed with 4K restorations not getting a UHD like Once Upon a Time in China or the La Strada reissue.

Did anyone notice that DVD is no longer an option for upcoming releases that don't have an already existing DVD release? Finally! Get people out of the 90s.

Depends on when the flash sale is. Both are set to drop 11/16.

I was about to say this. End of an era tbh. Looks like Uncut Gems will be The Criterion Collection's last new DVD release.

They might not have the rights to release those on 4K UHD.

In a world before Coming II America I would've thought that's not much of a joke.

I'm surprised they'd drop future DVD releases to be honest. I imagine they still get a decent percentage of sales from that market, but I guess they expect to make up any losses there with UHD now. Institutions/libraries may hurt the most from that decision, but they'll just have to adapt to Blu-ray if they haven't yet.

Adapt or die. Labels and consumers alike.

It isn't like those films aren't widely available on DVD. The studio releases have existed for years.

I'm a librarian who buys media for my library. We're fine with buying Blu-ray when there isn't DVD, though we do prefer DVD. This won't stop us from buying Criterion titles in the future.

So here we go... UHD releases are going to be mixed in with regular blu-ray releases for upcoming announcements starting with November 2021.

So now when we talk about "upgrades" we're going to have to clarify whether its a DVD upgrade to BD or a BD upgrade to 4K UHD! Or perhaps Criterion will go from a DVD upgrade to a 4K UHD upgrade (since they are including blu-rays too - that will prob. be upgraded as well) in their combo releases!

And of course DVDs of new spine numbers will no longer be released either.

Is that how its going to work you think regarding upgrading older releases?

(as for November's announcements: Amazing)

For as long as people have been pushing Criterion for UHD, there are still indies that aren't even releasing blu-ray. Breaking Glass, who release LGBTQ films I'd like to support still generally only releases DVD and digital, neither of which I'll buy. I've never understood their obstinance. "We" have more disposable income than any other demographic, allegedly. So I'm happy Criterion is finally making the change, I just wish some other small distributors would come out of 1997.
