Likes? Who gives a shit about likes? Can I redeem them for a prize? Criterion got Citizen ****ing Kane back, something that's already huge news in of itself, but they're also releasing it on 4K with HDR and Dolby Vision, and are including a ton of extras..And all people can talk about is a cover. It's just hilarious and sad that this is what the focus has been on since it was announced, and apparently still is. It just goes to show how much people love focusing on the negative.

That's an awful thing to say to a longtime member who consistently posts his opinions in a thoughtful and well articulated way.

Had they actually done anything that constituted "work" you might have a point.

I read it. I only own Bird but I couldn't help shake my head and laugh at his thoughts once again.

Gets it consistently wrong about the UHD format and already has had to correct several of his reviews which he always conveniently blames on his settings and setup.

To be fair, and I think this is a point that gets overlooked, there's more to an artists work than just the cover. Usually they do the interior work, and often the disc art, and booklet/leaflet art too. So yeah, the front cover looks like it could have been done in 5 minutes, but I'm sure the artist did do more elaborate stuff inside.

If you look at his body of work, the bulk of it doesn't look anything like this. It's like a odd mix of newspaper cutout collages pasted together. Perhaps Criterion didn't care for the overly abstract cover he did for Kane, and they just agreed to do something simple, yet still recognizable. I think this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as this release's artwork. I'm expecting the inside to be all kinds of weird.

A small sampling of his art. He does a lot of work for The New York Times, and perhaps it was that newspaper connection that got Criterion to commission him for Citizen Kane.

I have a feeling that CK will have a similar case as Menace where the slip case has the K cut out.

Here’s hoping we get a 4K of The Other Side of the Wind! My avatar would love it.

Heh. The reaction has been MUCH more positive outside of the Criterion forums, but that might also just be the backlash to the backlash.

Me, I'm waiting for the backlash to the backlash to the backlash, then the backlash to the backlash to the backlash to the backlash and then

Just like Fall Guy, this is one of his lesser known works and stars Ken Ogata, Mieko Harada, and Ayumi Ishida (Also Hunter in the Dark should get a release). The print I’m watching is like some broadcasted or VHS tape but looking at a few screenshots that somehow exist for this rare film, there seems to be a restoration for it and absolutely blows the TV version out of water. Also was Japan’s pick for Best Film at their Japanese Film Ceremony in 1986. A very nice drama, and you can see a few glimpses of Fukasaku’s trademark handheld camera movement used in fights as well, although the films tone is almost always subtle and sometimes dramatic, never violent or extreme like his earlier yakuza flicks. Really surprised that I managed to catch a screening of this randomly. Besides Fall Guy, this is probably his only essential title that still hasn’t gotten a Blu-ray in the US yet but it seems like a restoration and a Japanese Blu-ray exists for this somewhere. Interesting flick worth checking out for the Fukasaku fanatics 7/10
It's in HD on Amazon Prime in Japan, as are many wonderful things that haven't been released elsewhere. They're geo-locked and not English friendly, which seems crazy to me as it provides a good source for the illegal market that can then rip subs from elsewhere but allows for no legitimate revenue from outside Japan, where a lot of us would be very happy to spend money to access some of this stuff that just doesn't have a good enough audience to make it financially viable for most western companies to even consider.
There's not a lot from his catalogue that would fit well under the Criterion banner but I'd argue for Under the Flag of the Rising Sun, which is fantastic and much more serious than his yakuza fare (which is definitely Arrow's ballpark.)

One could argue that the Kane cover design is a total success based alone on the (half baked and marginal) outcry it's provoked.

I'd also encourage those with graphic art opinions to also check out Philately.
It's a great complimentary hobby.

I think they might have done the K cover on purpose to generate controversy (there's no such thing as bad publicity?), and I won't be surprised if the final cover is something a bit more classic and a bit less artsy.

If they don't change it it will always serve to generate chuckles in stores I'm sure.

Ultimately I'm beyond caring cause the fact alone that we got 3 UHD announcements from Criterion in yesterday's announcements still has me in a state of surprise.

The cover art is so "meh" it's hard to believe it has inspired such strong feelings, be they positive or negative.

I can just see Orson Welles getting the same reaction for the Citizen Kane title card. “What do you mean, it’s just a black screen with the title? Where’s the grand music? Where’s the visual interest? You’re supposed to be listing your cast and crew! You’re supposed to be setting up the film! This is the laziest piece of dreck I’ve ever seen! My four-year old could’ve done THAT!”
