Political tones of the film are not slammed down ones throats. The oil company that is in the foreign country happens to be a U.S. oil company and the workers that are contracted for the most part that are used happen to be locals. Now you can read that any way you like but I don't find it any more or any less political then other allegories in film. it isn't in the film as a discussion just an observation, the viewer can do with that what they like. For example the Oil company could have been Canadian and the foriegn country Spain. It could have been a fully American story where the workers are poor and will do anythign for a buck and can be hired cheap, it is just how the world works no matter who owns the companies and what ethnic background the worker is in. You could point out Norma Rae for that matter. This story happens to be what it is. Again it isn't a vocal point of the film, you just know these facts from observation and storyline. *** Recently I watched an Episode of DALLAS where J.R. Ewing illegally helps fund to voerthrow a "fake" asain government just to get back some oil leases. - Now however politcally soap opera charged as it may be it is just the storyline and if it strikes a chord then maybe it is because the art presents a truth. Last day of B&N sale...
Just picked up Yojimbo, Jigoku and The Hidden Fortress. My total haul over the course of the sale: Blu-ray Everything released so far, besides Bottle Rocket... DVD Amarcord: Re-issue, Andrei Rublev, Brazil: 3-disc, Contempt, Fires on the Plain, The Hidden Fortress, Jigoku, M., Nights of Cabiria, Onibaba, Ran, Rashomon, Seven Samurai: Re-issue, The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, The Sword of Doom, Two-Lane Blacktop, The Virgin Springs, Yojimbo. Now, I'll have to contemplate some of these $15.99 titles from Amazon. Last edited by QuasidodoJr; 08-03-2009 at 11:21 PM. |

The political theme is there but it is not the main direction of the film by any means. It's a really great movie and it would be a shame to dismiss it without seeing it for yourself.

the only disc that amazon put on sale that I was looking for and didn't get is Billy Liar, so I may pick that up from them.
edit - as for silence of the lambs, I got that before blu-ray was even a twinkle in my eye :P. I don't recommend buying it unless there are extras not on the blu, but I doubt that. Last edited by Variable; 08-04-2009 at 01:01 AM. |

I have that set... To be honest Richard III looks like a Disney animated film. I am curious about a BD release for that film. (that is my memory of it before Hi DEF came along)

Great way the technicolor Vista Vision is what I remember as blazing... Just put it in ... looks really good... It would defin. benefit from a HD BD upgrade... the transfer is not flawless but one of the most interesting looking films based on a Shakespeare play.
