The one in La Dolce Vita is ridiculously long. Most people don't give a shit who did what and the story of the original negative.

I think that's part of the deal when they license the film. When Criterion does their own digital restoration, they generally don't include one. But when it comes from other sources, it's likely included on the master file they receive and are contractually obligated to leave it there.

Top right click 'Site Preferences', then scroll down to 'Third Party Sites', uncheck both boxes, then 'Update Settings'.

Select Settings - Site preferences towards the bottom of the drop down menu

It opens a page with settings including a section called Third party sites

Make sure boxes for Display advertising and Display Facebook plugins are unchecked

Then click Update settings at the bottom of the page

I was hoping the Blu-ray would be part of the Criterion collection, even though the fall months have already been announced, but still hoping it happens. (Maybe streaming will happen this fall and the disc would come later?)

A perfect 5 star film IMO. The extras on the DVD are good (including even more sex!), but I’m sure there are more stories to be told.

No, I like knowing the backstory of the restoration, and also the reassurance of knowing I’m watching the right version.

I'm one who rarely listens to the commentary track while watching a film. I've done it a handful of times for specific movies I really love. But normally if there's an audio commentary (or two or more), I won't re-watch the film and listen to the commentary. I think its about 2 or 3% of the time I'll listen to a commentary track.

I adore commentaries and will always go for releases with them. That said, as someone with processing issues I find I can’t listen to a commentary in the background as I would like to, I don’t want to stare at a film I’ve just watched though it’s useful to see the visual details, but if I do something else it ends up taking 4 hours to listen with a lot of rewinding. Time really is the big issue with commentaries as you then don’t have the time to watch another film.

I think my favourite commentaries are David Kalat’s.

Some 4K releases are expensive, like the 10 disc release of Suspiria in Germany, or the UK auctions for Suspiria from CultFilms.

UK is dominated by DVD focused labels like Signature, Altitude (though some BDs) or High Fliers. Even Fabulous and Final Cut grab DVD rights for films on BD from other labels.

I popped open my Criterion blu-ray of Crash last night for the first time and it was maybe the first time in 24 years since I saw this film. Pretty much forgot about everything but I gotta say, if you like sex, cars, and car crashes, this is your movie. I'm kind of questioning myself why I ended up buying this one though. Oh well, maybe I'll listen to the commentary to figure out what was going through Cronenberg's head. I feel like this is a polarizing film. Either you love it or hate it.

Have you ever read J. G. Ballard's original 1973 novel? Cronenberg had to tame down the story otherwise the movie would have been x-rated. It's about

[Show spoiler]Ballard, his wife and his crazy friend who wants to die in an accident involving Elizabeth Taylor. His friend will have sex with any woman in a car, including Ballard's wife while he's driving. Many pages of descriptions of what his friend is doing to his wife.

It was the pushing of the British New Wave SF novel (man meshed with machine) to such an extreme it became its own category.

DVDCompare doesn’t list the commentary which is why I went for the DVD, is it actually on there?

OK, I popped it in to confirm. I can't read German, so I mostly tested this through just my eyes and ears. There is a cast and crew commentary track for the film, in English. You can choose subtitles for the film (English or German) or the commentary (German only). Then the extras also have an extra commentary track.
