Their website says the only way to submit corrections is to post them in their Rewind forum, so I attempted to register for an account yesterday and still have not heard back. Gee, I wonder why no one offers them corrections when they make it unnecessarily difficult.

Their registration system is weird. I was looking all over the forums in the typical places for a signup link, and I ended up just googling "dvdcompare register" which led me to a non-forum registration page (edit: I see now that they listed forum registration amongst their other forums, which is an odd place to put it ). It seems like you are really just submitting a request to register, and then the admins manually register you themselves to the phpBB forum system. Really dumb.

In the last 20 years, I can't remember a forum that required that you be manually approved. All I wanted to do is give them a correction for free from my own research. Definitely do not plan to spend much time in their domain again.

If there's another format it will be Hologram (HG). You will be able to buy a small stainless steel case with the movie's artwork and 'C' engraved on it. You will be able to open the case and press a button to project the movie in any space in perfect, crystal clear Ultra High Definition.

Collectors will swoon over who has the shiniest cases and complaints will be made about broken projection buttons.

I’m drooling thinking about how Gregg Toland’s gorgeous black and white cinematography in Citizen Kane is going to look in 4K.
Totally agree. I won’t be upgrading the majority of my collection beyond BD regardless of 4K availability. But there are still a lot of films I’m always going to plunge for again, and Kane is one of them.

Moving all my blu-rays in extra large boxes (including 3 full boxes of Criterions) from PA to NJ on Sunday! That's just a few things amongst over 150 bins and boxes (and some furniture) in the 26 foot U-Haul truck!

Agree with all of this. I still avidly collect DVDs of films that never made it to Blu, so there is no way Blu technology will ever fall out of favor with me. I too will be very particular about upgrading to 4K. Certain titles will have built in attraction for me (such as the ones you mentioned, TD), but I just can't envision the same jump to 4K as it was from DVD to Blu. Even if the variety of titles becomes as wide as Blus have (though I'm fairly certain that will never happen).

I agree that we'll never see 8K discs. But we'll likely have 8K HDTVs eventually. Physical media, and I hate to say this, is dying. I love physical media, and I refused to stream for a long time. But the writing is on the wall. I'm not happy about it either.

So, yes, this is likely the definitive physical release for Citizen Cane. I just happen to be one of those people who don't care for it. But I'll likely get The Red Shoes, which is a favorite of mine, despite the fact that I already have it on Blu-Ray.

I continually argue that the decline of physical media has a hard bottom. People still buy media, people still want it. Maybe it’s not as the juggernaut that it once was, but consistent, E-books plateaued; people want physical editions of books too. Vinyl has now been back as a sales force for more than a decade and has proven its long-term viability.

Yeah, streaming will dominate, but there’s no reason to believe physical media just going to disappear when it simply hasn’t happened for other media with easy access options. And I suspect it’s going to stay that way as streaming makes it paradoxically harder for some titles to be found.

Didn’t we do a round of “probably the last time you’ll ever buy this. . .” a few years back?

I moved a couple of months ago from Hawaii to the Pacific Northwest. My Criterions and fellow discs were treated to a nice ocean voyage and finally arrived a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, physical media will continue. But UHD is likely the last step for physical media. Streaming will continue to improve and, despite any improvement that discs have over streaming, streaming will prevail (just like music downloads prevail over CDs and LPs).

Congrats. Now what I didn't include in the photo is how I stored the blu-rays. I actually have them in special media bins but then stacked 3 of each in the box for extra protection. This way I don't have to carry each of the 15 separate media bins and instead just have 5 boxes (less trips to the U-Haul truck back and forth).

How many blu-rays did you end up shipping over?

Roughly 1850. I’m so glad that it’s over with. First move in 30 years and it was a lot easier (and cheaper!) when I was 40.

I agree with this. Same with video games too. There will always be enough people to warrant physical copies imo.

You abandoned me and my birth place 'ya (censored)! And with all those years here you still forget to put the 'okina in Hawai'i...I tell you! Hope all's going well in the soon to be murder hornet infested Pacific Northwest.

I have a thought. Criterion made a mistake and put the wrong booklet in a recent release. They should do that for all their movies and make it like a prize in Cracker Jacks. I'd buy Mirror and get the book for The Philadelphia Story, then buy Philadelphia Story and get the book for Black Moon. But make it completely arbitrary so there's no way to know what book you're getting with any purchase. Collectors would either have to find a way to exchange booklets or buy every title available more than once. Marketing at its 'finest.'

I suspect they’ll endure too, even though at this point, there’s no quality difference between an online or a disc-based delivery mechanism, and in fact, a downloaded version has some actual advantages. And there’s not really a nostalgia issue like there is for books or music or movies, unless it’s a special edition. (Or a dead format - I get misty when I see, like, an old Intellivision cartridge.)

But there’s a simpler motive - people like to sell them when they’re done.

I suspect there’s one more step. It won’t necessarily be for 8k, though it could include that. It’ll be a format for uncompressed or lossless video. Now, it’s possible they could do that on UHD, but it may require one more jump in capacity. Either way, I think that’ll be the final frontier, where your copy has no appreciable difference from the master.

When watching the main feature. I can't get the audio to work on Some Like it Hot, Fellini Satyricon and Roma. Audio works for all the extras. Are these discs defective? Is this issue common with Criterion releases? I have not come across a disc from any other company that has this issue.
