Anyway, what do you think the odds are of Moonstruck getting a 4K release? I'm quite conflicted on where to go with this title - I'm trying to fullset Nicolas Cage, and I've been wanting to see a Cher film for an eternity, and I just discovered they both starred in a film together. I definitely need it in my collection, but, it seems the $5 on Ebay blu-ray is quite excellent. Spending $22-25 on the Criterion version could be worth it... But, maybe it'll be like Uncut Gems, and get a 4K release right after? It does have a 4K master.

Any thoughts?

Hard to say. Moonstruck is one of my three favorite films of all-time and I would welcome any version Criterion chose to put out. But it’s a super recent release and it looks pretty damn terrific as is. So as much as some of the pops of color and deep shadow would look fantastic in UHD and HDR, my feeling is that we’re not going to see it anytime soon.

Thank you for making fun of my comment; but they did release VHS refer to wiki:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...amax_cassettes

VHS and Betamax cassettes
In 1985 and 1989, Criterion Collection released three titles on VHS: The 39 Steps (1935), The Lady Vanishes (1938) and The Third Man (1949). They were released simultaneously with Criterion's LaserDiscs of the same titles, with spine numbers 003–005 respectively, and at least the last title was also issued on Betamax.[3] However, they did not sell well and no more were issued but they are now collectors' items.[4]

And most likely those were milked in LD/DVD/Blu-ray, so there you go: The Lady Vanishes got VHS-LD-DVD-Blu-ray; wonder when will the 4K come? They did not milk the license enough /end sarcasm.

Yeah, every company that’s rereleased titles in the latest modern format is ripping you off, double-dipping, and milking it. Fortunately you have the choice to just ignore all of that and get on with your life.

The shame of them milking me for all my money! I mean, my VHS machine should be sitting right there and apparently I should never have upgraded. One format, forever! Just because 4k HDR is the first format that can come in range of actually capturing the native resolution and full color information of film, you should be happy with your 4-disc 480p laserdisc version of Lawrence of Arabia and learn to love interrupting your movie 7 times, PEONS.

The Music Lovers is from 1971. Would it even benefit from a Blu? I don’t think so, straights to VHs.

I get the joke, Thoroughly Modern Millie, haha, but The Music Lovers doesn't have an intermission and never had a longer roadshow version.

Regarding my long-winded diatribe last night, that's what happens when you've had a few drinks and had a stressful day.... best NOT to post anything!!! You will look like a fool. But I'm leaving that post up so all can learn from that lesson.

You surely jest! For years, the scope laserdisc was the best version as the VHS was P&S. MGM's MOD DVD-R came out 10 years ago, and is better, but that seems OOP now, as well.

It might be a good idea to wait for the mid-October announcement. I think this will be very telling because it will likely be the first announcement after the initial six UHDs have all received street dates.

Love on ya for owning up to a wild moment.

I've never seen The Music Lovers, but when looking it up I found these which made me think of the joke.

Seems like anything MGM and with a 4K master (not just transfer) is fair game to come from Kino so far. Here's all the titles that would be under those qualifications:

The Great Escape (1963)
The Graduate (1967)
In the Heat of the Night (1967)
Midnight Cowboy (1969)
1984 (1984)
Blue Velvet (1986) - I think it's safe to assume this will remain with Criterion.
Sid & Nancy (1986)
The Princess Bride (1987)
Matewan (1987)

(These are all the titles listed as a 4K restoration and/or listed in Park Circus' inventory has having 4K DCPs)

Good news for me. Criterion just contacted me and advised that the captioning/subtitles have been add to the following movies: JOURNEY TO ITALY, Q PLANES, and MY BROTHER'S WEDDING.

I think I'll watch Journey to Italy tonight, and maybe one other.

An icon and a legend. RIP

First Belmondo film: Breathless. For me, he's the epitome of cool with tons of charisma. The way he carries himself with such confidence and vulnerability at times, makes the film feel so fresh on repeat viewings.

Favorite role: As a priest in Leon Morin, Priest. One might think this role is a stretch but he pulls it off so effortlessly. Belmondo and Riva are incredible together. One of my favorite movies. I'd like to track down an English copy of the novel.

I preordered the Criterion UHD release of Citizen Kane and Menace II Society, neither of which I own at all, the latter being a blind buy. I'm on the fence, however, about Mulholland Dr. I have both the Criterion and 4K-sourced Studio Canal blu-rays and am wondering if it would perhaps just be more cost effective to buy the European-released 4K when the time comes. I'm assuming with the 4K blu-ray format there'll be less of an urge to double dip than there was with 'regular' blu-ray, since variations in quality between different releases are often less of an issue, since all releases are routinely sourced from the same master. I could be wrong though

I wish Criterion would add English dub to Jellyfish Eyes.
