Janus Films have acquired the rights to Ryusuke Hamaguchi's 'Drive My Car', a title that received major acclaim and multiple awards during this year's Cannes festival.

Belmondo, you will be missed!

Here is my favorite Belmondo moment, a scene, which I consider to be, the greatest serio-comic scene in cinema history! Enjoy!

For those of you who have not yet seen Pierrot Le Fou, PLEASE DO NOT WATCH THIS FINAL SCENE:

Belmondo has lots of action films under his belt, which a lot of them haven't been given releases yet still. I think it would be a good opportunity for companies like Kino Lorber (Since they released a few like Cartouche and Professional) to release as much of them as they can (Although a lot of them aren't well known, but he's done a lot of films that sounds like they all got similar ratings to each other). One of the films I would love to see get a Criterion release is Alain Resnais's Stavisky... Hell, get Providence and The War is Over while they're at it. I think those three titles would be worthy to get the Criterion treatment, and are super high on my watchlist, considering how well praised they are.

Wow, this is great news. I was hoping that U.S. distributors would pick up this one and his other film that came out this year "Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy".

Also, if it gets blu-ray release, that'd be kind of a big deal IMO because it would be just the fourth post-2000 Japanese film in the collection. The previous ones being Still Walking, Jellyfish Eyes, and Like Someone In Love (Japanese production, Iranian director).

There was a recent post estimating the next Criterion Flash Sale will be late October. Is there a release date cutoff for titles included in the sale? For example, The Incredible Shrinking Man is due for release on Oct 19. Would that title be available at the sale price?

It should be everything they have currently in stock. Pre-orders won't get included. I believe the estimate was the 19th, so Shrinking Man should qualify.

We could be seeing 1 more modern Japanese film being released on blu with Criterion/Janus holding the rights to Kazuo Hara's Sennan Asbestos Disaster.

I've been wondering why this underground classic still hasn't made it's way to blu.
Like, I know it was released in Germany (and France too I guess), but i'm talking about it being released by a major label like Criterion.

They could do an amazing job restoring this and for sure there would be plenty of goodies for bonus materials, like an essay/interview with Christiane herself and interviews with cast members (would be great to see Thomas Haustein - who portrays Christiane's boyfriend Detlef - talking about his role and how it was for him to be on the 'scene' to get into character and how it was for him to work with drug addicts years after he finished the film).

Do you guys think we can expect this one coming any time soon?

Also this would be a nice addition to their catalogue too, the script was based in real experiences Nikki Reed (who plays Evie) had in her teenage years

If i'm not mistaken, Janus has a few of his films, if not most.

Yep, Janus have the rights to 5 of his films (though only 1 is from the 21st century). I wonder if they will be releasing them all together as a boxset or if they will be individual releases.

I blanked on that aspect. Sorry. I forgot how time works in 2020.

you may already know this, but Cannes used this image for their 2018 festival. you can buy posters of it on eBay. I like the image taken straight from PLF, though.. I like the trees and landscape in the background.

Hello everyone,

New to the forum, but not new to movie collecting, per se.

Like many of you, I am excited to see Criterion jump into UHDs. I have held off trying to collect Criterion releases because of stuff going OOP, and my OCD not "allowing" me to start what will ultimately be an incomplete collection.

However, I told myself, that if they ever start releasing 4K discs, I will begin collecting them. That way, I can stay ahead of the curve (so-to-speak), and still be satisfied with at least owning all their releases to a singular format.

I know that logic doesn't make full sense, as not everything will come to the 4k format, but at least I'll be able to jump in the Criterion water, and simultaneously reconcile my OCD. This may sound eye roll inducing, but trust me, it's a very real problem for me.

Honestly, this happening is exactly what drove me to join this forum. This is an excellent resource when it comes to release schedules, and the like.

Admittedly, I may not be well versed in the entire catalog, but I love film, and admire the fact they release stuff that other labels aren't willing (or able) to release. And hey, we all have to start somewhere.

As someone who has suffered from OCD forever and been medicated to control it during the last few decades, trust me when I say you will feel right at home here on this site's forum.

Yes, Criterion has really poor representation for 2000s Asian cinema as a whole. Many really well regarded films out of Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan too have yet to see quality releases stateside (UK seems to be a bit better). Frankly it’s kind of insane to think that an undisputed classic like Memories of Murder got under Criterion’s radar only after Parasite. The film was highly regarded within a few years of release, and I’ll never understand how it never even had a good special edition DVD release in the US. Prior to blu-ray, being limited to Criterion for one’s world cinema exposure would mean that it would be hardly surprising for one to think that In the Mood for Love was the only film out of Asian cinema to have made any noise since the 90s. But in reality a lot of Asian films, both art house and mainstream, generated hype in cineaste circles in the 2000s.
