I can't wait to own Citizen Kane and Mulholland Drive on UHD.

Well that's very good news indeed. My understanding is that Rosebud is a reference to a sled that Charles Kane had as a child.

Believe it or not, this reference was actually spoiled for me in my youth by the cartoon Tiny Toon Adventures. They did a parody episode that used Montana Max (IIRC) and changed the sled to a bicycle.

I don't recall how, but my 13 year old self knew this was spoofing Kane, and I discovered (or somehow knew at the time) the bicycle was actually a sled in the film.

How I put it all together, I honestly don't remember, but that spoiler has stuck with me my entire life.

So I've tried the Panasonic remote hack on my new Region-B locked 4K blu-ray player, and it seems to work on Region A-locked Criterions for the most part. I tried it with Red Desert, La Dolce Vita(standalone), Tree of Life, Barry Lyndon, That Obscure Object of Desire, A Brighter Summer Day, Lola Montes, and the Kino blu-ray of Alphaville.

Of the Criterions the trick only failed with Lola Montes, although I had to make two or three attempts with Red Desert. Unfortunately, it didn't work with Alphaville either.

As usual,

I'm hoping for some cool announcements today.

I rarely get my wishlist stuff, but I'm always hoping....

Would love to see:

ANY Scorsese (AFTER HOURS, Bringing Out the Dead, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore)
Queimada! (Burn!)
Dersu Uzala
The Devils (I know, I know)
The Piano

How likely is a UHD of La Piscine, considering it's already gotten a UHD release in France?

Probably unlikely. Not anytime soon at least.

I thought Citizen Kane was about Mr Burns

There's no way of knowing for certain but I don't it's happening any time soon. I'm basing this off how long it took for Criterion to issue Night Train to Munich and The Fugitive Kind on blu-ray after both had been issued on DVD during the blu-ray era.

Would Inland Empire benefit from the format in any way? Somehow I don't think so.

It would. See this article I posted

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...4&postcount=20

It was released on BD internationally, and it shows improvement over the DVD.

I wonder if Criterion would still consider releasing a Kurosawa boxset now that they went 4K. I mean, I know that it was just a rumor, but it's strange that they haven't released a Kurosawa on blu-ray for some years now...

And they have a few that still need Blu-ray upgrades like Red Beard.

I have to imagine that these box sets are hugely profitable for them. That the Bergman box set sold so much better than they expected (remember how hard it was to find a copy a couple of years ago?). And they've just kept at it.

Kurosawa, even if not complete but just robust, would probably be a huge money maker for them. The only question is do they just do it all Blu-ray or include some 4Ks in the bunch? My bet would be all Blu-ray with some individual releases in 4K later. Collectors will moan about it, but Criterion probably knows they'll still sell.

I'm really hoping Criterion is announcing Beautiful Thing (1996) forat least a BD release. I'm pretty sure it's gotten a rescan in the last year or two.
