Is the director or cinematographer taking their time to come in? Are they waiting on other labs or studio entities? Are we just assuming they have the rights to a particular film? Do they know they’re going to lose the rights in a short period and it’s not worth the amount of effort? Are they coordinating a release with other films for a box set?

There’s an astonishing amount of variables at play and we’re privy to just about none of them. All I know is that Criterion has not and never is going to release anything based on what people expect them to do. I especially laugh all the time when people build up expectations over a certain spine number coming up, only to be disappointed when Criterion clearly considers it unimportant and immaterial in the scope of things. Whatever they put out is, to me, fine. I’ve got nothing riding on something being in the collection or not, and whether or not it happens when I expect.
To be honest, speaking personally, I feel like we know too much as it is, nevermind the rampant speculation. I tend to feel underwhelmed when a release I know is coming is announced because there's no surprise there, which sometimes makes me stay off the forum a bit, at least a day or two before announcement day, just to avoid reading all the speculation, because I like the excitement of the unknown. I mentioned this in a previous post, but all three titles in the December slate were releases we knew were coming. Even though I intend to buy all three, the announcement left me completely underwhelmed.

Surprised there are no early reviews for THE DAMNED yet. Usually some sites have criterion reviews up a month ahead of the release.

LAST TANGO... absolutely deserves a 4k with comprehensive contextual features but I wonder if anyone will touch it right now, due to the erroneous but alarmingly widespread belief that Maria Schneider was ACTUALLY raped during the filming.

Whilst I'd make no excuses for the ethical breach that occurred on set, it's amazing how much misinformation there is out there, even amongst people you'd expect to know better. Maria Schneider certainly didn't want to see the film suppressed and it would be a great shame if this important film was allowed to slip into obscurity.

Way of the world now. Criterion has very much bought into it too. Rumor has it they've sat on, or let go, many films because of erroneous beliefs.

For those that can't wait till the next 50% off sale, Deep Discount has reduced the prices on most Criterion titles, and also haas a 15% off code (for in-stock items) that drops titles lower than the 50% off sales.

Apply code AUTUMN15

I hadn't noticed it before but it looks like High Sierra has a bonus second feature, a western called Colorado Territory. It's definitely going on my wishlist.

I think I missed something. How was the WKW box set botched?

Revisionist gradings, and many people getting unplayable discs (which Criterion are providing replacements for).

Does anyone know if this is the correct e-mail if you need to notify Criterion of a defective disc for replacement....mulvaney@criterion.com?

I have 3 titles that are defective and I sent an e-mail earlier this year but did not get a response. Thanks

I bought mine instore at B&N sealed inside another, plain box. When I opened it the WKW set had a long deep crease along the front and numerous large dents. The outer box was fine

I've emailed orders@criterion.com in the past and received quick responses, but that might just be for titles ordered directly from the criterion.com store.

I was able to scratch a big itch with their release of Mirror, so I can grouse too much.

But I do agree that it's been an otherwise sparse year.

Least amount of Criterion discs I have bought of any year so far...just not a lot of "must own titles" for me as in other years (less than a dozen). That is fine as other companies have stepped up and I can use the money on their releases.

Same. Just did a quick check and it seems I have exactly 7 releases from each of 2018, 2019, and 2020, and 4 from 2021. I'm fine with that.
