My Blatantly Obvious Bias: It's especially disappointing for me to see them, once again, just sort of neglect silent film entirely.

Can I just say -- as an old Hollywood b&w/noir junkie -- what a stunning year this has been for Criterion!

Bringing Up Baby
The Furies
Nightmare Alley
Pickup on South Street
High Sierra

I also appreciate that they are branching out into new directions with films such as Deep Cover, Love & Basketball, Menace II Society, and Marvin Van Peebles -- besides old favorites such as Mirror, Celine & Julie, Ashes & Diamonds, and Wong Kar Wai. It's like Criterion used to be the botique foreign distributor only, but now their catalog has become more diverse AND more accessible. I think it's safe to say they offer something for everyone now.

Agree totally. In fact, two of those were two of my 10 most wanted. One and two, actually.

Silent film has usually been Kino and Flicker Alley's special area.

Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits mentions that Criterion is working on a 4K restoration of Amadeus for release next year . Given that there has been a rumor in the works for a long time of a 4K release of Amadeus, can we hope that Criterion will release this as a 4K disc?

I have 3 titles that are defective and I sent an e-mail earlier this year but did not get a response. Thanks

The mulvaney address sometimes gets almost and immediate answer, other times it seems to get lost in the pile

Which discs are you having issue with.

I just mentioned this on the Amadeus thread. I've been Googling "Amadeus 4K" for the past few weeks, and I was so excited when I saw this. I hope the rumors are true. If so, this is going to be one of the best releases of the year.

Thanks.

The discs are Summer Hours, 8 1/2 & Fat Girl.

There's also the possibility Criterion has Double Indemnity. Someone asked Kino if they had it and they said no, another label has it....

Glad to know I'm not the only one that does this. Every so often I'll search Black Narcissus because it turns 75 next year and is likely getting a 4k scan.

I’m sure it was rhetorical, but I’ll still answer the question: Yes, I hope that’s happening!

Janus Films also screened the recent 4k restoration of La Haine back in fall of 2020. Really hoping they release it on UHD sometime next year.

Someone has found the "Mulholland Drive" U.S. TV Spots.
Universal created a beautiful marketing campaign for the film, it is little sad that Criterion disc doesn't has a section for the film's marketing materials. (like what they did with "Short Cuts" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas")

I think Black Narcissus is just as deserving of a 4K UHD release as The Red Shoes, if not more.

It's too difficult for me to pick one over the other so I choose both.

Does Criterion still have rights to Powell & Pressburger's The Tales of Hoffmann?

They lost the rights, but they're rumored to have gotten it back. Studiocanal released a BD of it in 2015 internationally, sourced from a new 4K restoration supervised by Scorsese among others.

Severin Films is releasing All or Nothing by Mike Leigh. Which I thought would've been a Criterion release.
