Fair comment. It would interesting to have a look at this transfer to see if it really is as bad as this site is saying it is.

Sorry just checked the forum, I didn't go off of this sites review. But I did make a mistake, when I first had read a review for the MC release of Age of Consent/Cactus Flower (more then 3 years ago) I missed the part of the review comparing Age of Consent A/V to that of its Indicator release. I originally took the issues to be for Cactus Flower (my bad!).

I still stand that Cactus Flower deserves it's own release, it's a film that stars 3 big named stars Walter Matthau, Ingrid Bergman & Goldie Hawn (in her Oscar winning role), it was well known enough to warrant a terrible remake (Just Go with It). Will never know if it would have sold well on it own because MC took that option away.

Occam's razor makes me suspect Ritrovata hasn't done color-blindness tests on the color grading team.

What's a color-blind person's favorite color? Yellow

The review here of the 4k from Kino outright states that Kino didn't get the ungraded 4k master, they started with Ritrovata's yellowed master. I don't know why Kino found that acceptable.

Ritrovata apparently apply a film print LUT after grading so the supervisors for grades probably sign off on something very different to what is actually then supplied to licensors. It also explains why all their grades look the same irrespective of who supervised them.

I didn't know about that. I maintain my point about somebody in this chain being color-blind.

^I recall reading something about that film LUT being applied so that a film element made off that master comes out right after photochemical processing. If so, it's a pity they can't have an option of separate masters for direct digital display and for celluloid printing, or at least provide the license-holders with instructions for how to tweak the colors for either case. If it's some kind of blanket grade, it can't be that difficult to dial back, can it?

Yes they should be providing an option to home video licensors for the pre-LUT master.

As for removing the Ritrovata LUT application, Camera Obscura posted that it was a tortuous and time consuming process when they tried to do so for their release of The Bloodstained Butterfly (you can see the results of their efforts by comparing the screenshots in the Arrow and Camera Obsura release reviews). More recently Arrow just get Ritrovata to do the scanning and do the grading and restoration entirely themselves.

This was mentioned by starsteam in the Godzilla thread, but figured it should be mentioned here too. Alamo Drafthouse has teamed up with Toho, and Janus Films to host the world premiere of the 4K restoration of Gojira (1954) on November 3rd.

Alamo will also be showing Godzilla vs Hedorah (1971), Shin Godzilla (2016), and a Heisei double-feature with Return of Godzilla (1984) and Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989) later in the month. Tickets are already up for sale. They're almost completely sold out locally for me.

On Godzilla Day, Be the First Audience in the Galaxy to See GOJIRA 4K in a Theater

Next month marks Godzilla’s 67th birthday, and we’re teaming up with our pals at Toho International, Inc. and Janus Films to celebrate a character – no, a force of nature! – whose influence on worldwide pop culture has spanned a solid 2/3 of a century.

On Wednesday, November 3rd – Godzilla’s actual birthday – Alamo Drafthouse locations across the country will exclusively host a coast-to-coast Godzilla Day world premiere of the highly anticipated 4K remastering of GOJIRA, the 1954 original from Japan that ignited the phenomenon. That’s right, Alamo Drafthouse audiences will be the first theatrical audiences in the world to see this brand new 4K version of GOJIRA.

Gojira (1954)

WORLD PREMIERE OF THE NEW 4K RESTORATION
Presented in Japanese with English subtitles

Godzilla is the roaring granddaddy of all monster movies. It’s also a remarkably humane and melancholy drama, made in Japan at a time when the country was reeling from nuclear attack and H-bomb testing in the Pacific. Its rampaging radioactive beast, the poignant embodiment of an entire population’s fears, became a beloved international icon of destruction, spawning almost thirty sequels. (Janus Films)

The disc itself has a hard time loading into the movie selection screen (I think it took like a few tries and at least 2-3 minutes to boot), i think thats the only issue i've found.

It's working now, but I checked a couple pages earlier (main page, coming soon, and shop) and they all gave the application error.

edit: Still had a tab open with the error. It looked like this:

I know CC doesn't reissue Remastered BDs. Very rare. But how awesome would it be if they released a UHD of Gojira. I wouldn't even care if it was a SDRUHD.

I'm hoping one day Criterion upgrades The Leningrad Cowboys: Total Balalaika Show, because I can't live without a version of ZZ Tops' Gimme All Your Lovin' done as part polka, part zydeco with a bit of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus thrown in for good measure. Love the backdrop parody of the back cover of the Deguello album.

Not officially. Criterion tends to let it be known about 24 hours ahead of time through email.

Odds are it's the 19th, though.

I think he means the B&N one. Info usually gets leaked a couple weeks ahead of it, often on Reddit.

The November B&N sale will most likely start on the first Friday of the month. That's usually when the sales start.

Target having another B2G1 deal. Depending on the title, it can work out way cheaper than any 50% off sale, especially if you have a redcard.
