Please promise yourself to give both Citizen Kane and Fellini, in general, a second chance sometime in the near future. If they still don’t resonate with you, that’s totally fine. Not every film will speak to every person. Art is subjective, and films approaching two hours, with so many different variables and stylistic choices possible, even the best films may not touch something inside you.
The first time I watched La Dolce Vita, while I appreciated the cinematography, it didn’t vibe with me. About a month later, I re-watched it, and absolutely fell in love with it. Suddenly I started to “get” Fellini, and that opened my eyes to the joys of Italian cinema, both the directors and her many stars. To think that I may have stopped after one viewing, what I may have never experienced. I’d have never seen the films of Michelangelo Antonioni or Vittorio De Sica, never appreciated the rich working relationship of Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren. You may similarly discover a second viewing of a Fellini film opens up worlds previously unknown to you. |

Fellini is an odd duck. The latter half of his filmography is definitely not for everybody. Amarcord, as previously mentioned, is a good one to try. La Strada and Nights of Cabiria are also good introductions, if someone balks at the 3 hour runtime of La Dolce Vita. Il Bidone is another good one.
With the exception of the above mentioned Amarcord, his color films are for those well versed in Fellini. |

La Strada is a great place to start with Fellini. It might take a little while for 'things to slow down' with him until movies like 8 1/2 or La dolce vita become enjoyable.

I think someone could go into Ginger and Fred without previous exposure to Fellini's films, though, and enjoy it. It's sweet enough on its own without being steeped in the man's body of work. |

I just watched it again after the big box set came out, and I'd swear it was a different movie. I guess experience really does change how you respond to some things, because I loved it this time despite dreading the re-exposure (a friend wanted to watch it). It's probably in the top of his films for me now. I completely agree it's not for a general audience. It wanders, and it makes a lot of demands on the viewer. If someone is used to that style and likes it, they'll enjoy Satyricon. If not, there are a lot of other great films by him in a more accessible style that other posters have mentioned. |

I could see And the Ship Sails On appealing almost as much as Ginger and Fred. |

I recently rewatched 8 1/2, as it’s held in such universally high regard that I felt like I must have missed something first time round. The second viewing only entrenched my initial antipathy. I find it boring and incredibly self-indulgent, and I doubt a third viewing will disavow me of that impression. There are wonderful moments, and many great images and sequences within, but Fellini’s perennial obsessions - Catholic guilt and circus grotesquerie - simply don’t resonate with me, and the plight of the protagonist - a wealthy philandering filmmaker with a messiah complex who is misunderstood by the obsequious coterie of socialites, fashionistas, groupies and lesser mortal who surround him - doesn’t exactly engender sympathy. I can find things to like in most of Fellini’s later works (and I agree, Amarcord is a late career highlight) - Juliet of the Spirits also has great moments, but some late Fellini (e.g. The Voice of the Moon) is almost hilariously bad, as if Fellini is pastiching himself. FWIW, I love Italian cinema, with a general preference for the neorealist school (as with Fellini, I prefer early Visconti to later Visconti), and Antonioni is certainly one of my favourite directors - the incredible trilogy L’Avventura, L’Eclisse and La Notte more or less represents the high watermark of European cinema for me.
