What I got out of him in regard to Japanese cinema. Two 60's titles. One is an upgrade from a director who only has 1 film in the collection. 1 80's animated title. Two post 2000 titles, one a Kiyoshi Kurosawa title to be released alongside Cure which is slated for a March/April release. One boxset that is a director's entire filmography. Guessing Juzo Itami.

I guess we'll know next week or next month if they were full of it or not.

Topsy-Turvy is an excellent humorous drama, although it is not an archetype Leigh film since it is set in the more plush and colorful theatrical world (and is a period picture to boot) than his usual contemporary working class dramas.

I'll throw another in another apparent fettucine reveal which I don't think has been mentioned yet - I asked about an upgrade of The Ruling Class, and while they said that isn't happening, for some reason they disclosed that a 4K UHD release of Peeping Tom is, including an appreciation by Edgar Wright as one of the new features.

I will say that this seems like a very obvious shout. After all, we know it is being restored, if it hasn't been already (indeed, I was expecting a release by StudioCanal in the UK this year).

I think almost everybody will say Secrets & Lies (which I think is his best film from what I've seen) and Naked as the best he's done in the Criterion Collection. I also rate Another Year and Happy-Go-Lucky very highly, but everything I've seen from him is quality (I haven't seen Topsy Turvy or Life Is Sweet yet from Criterion's catalogue, though I do own them). Meantime, All or Nothing, and Vera Drake I've also seen and enjoyed a lot. Meantime was originally made for television and might be his most 'British' movie I've seen, speaking somewhat more to a particular moment in England, so it might be a more acquired taste.

Leigh mentioned in a recent interview that Bleak Moments was coming into the collection, and also that the new 4K remaster of Naked would, too, which suggests perhaps a UHD, given that they've already released it on Blu-Ray and they don't reissue same-format, same-package titles with new masters (you can still buy the old master of In the Mood for Love on the standalone, for example). BFI just put out Naked with the new master and Bleak Moments on Blu-Ray. In other words, I would wait to buy Naked.

There’s a new restoration that’s been done by the British Film Institute, and it’s going to be in the Criterion Collection, as is a new restoration of Naked, which is going on theatrical release in the U.K.

Do Criterion ever do anniversary releases?
I've mentioned before on this forum of the possibility of Pink Flamingo's and the 50th anniversary for the films release (I think) is March, 2022.
This is the theory part...
Criterion are announcing the March slate of releases this month, I'm guessing on the 15th like past months..

Has there been anniversary releases before? Is it a thing?

They don't mark titles as anniversary releases (even if they sometimes coincide with anniversaries).

I wanted to post this in the Criterion 4K thread, but I'll post it here, since this thread gets more traffic.

I just wanted to say that at least for me, the important question would be which films are likely to get Criterion UHD releases without also getting competitively priced UHD releases of at least comparable quality in the UK or France. This is of course a selfish financial consideration on my part, but I'm wondering if there any films likely to get the UHD treatment from Criterion that wouldn't have a chance of getting comparable treatment in Europe.

It already appears Studio Canal's UHD release of Breathless was problematic. I'm not sure whether or not Criterion would improve upon SC's Le Cercle Rouge release, assuming they do release it.

I don't anything he said in terms of being rude got him banned. He probably got banned for being able to verify everything he was stating. Not sure.

JIGOKU would fit that bill, which would be tight.

CURE as March or April given its theatrical tour does make logical sense, though. The paired Kiyoshi would be more telling regarding the validity of their claims.

Pretty much. If we get a Kiyoshi Kurosawa title along with Cure it pretty much means that they were telling the truth. If that were to happen I would guess Tokyo Sonata, but who knows.

Creepy is still with KimStim I believe, and I think Eureka's rights to Tokyo Sonata expired, which is why I think it might be that, if pasta was telling the truth.

JIGOKU would be epic.

He ran up against the Man. He was in danger of revealing Criterion’s entire planned output and had to be silenced. You don’t mess with Big Blu.
