I don’t see why Criterion shouldn’t get 4K only rights though? Kino on their part have done so for CC titles on blu-ray left, right and centre.

Barton Fink is pretty high on my list. It's tailor made for Criterion

Kino isn't as fussed about uniformity in their SKU's as Criterion. That's likely part of why they agonize over every format transition.

Sure, but they already dropped DVD editions for some of their 4K upgrades, and since some newer titles are still Blu-ray only, surely some can be 4K only with a blu-ray copy slapped in exclusive to the 4K release to deal with the SKU uniformity without having to get in Kino’s hairs.

For the 4K exclusive titles, they could just as well also issue a stand alone blu-ray exclusively for their UK issues.

Hasn’t been Criterion’s policy so far been with 4K to included the Blu-Ray movie all well? The Blu-Ray disc includes all the supplements and the 4K is only the movie.

In those cases I could see it being a 4k disc of the movie and a blu-ray that only has whatever supplements they can use/create, just no movie on that disc.

What do you mean you could see the included BD leaving out the film? None of their 4K releases have done that yet.

If they only have the rights to release the 4K, they legally can’t put a blu-ray of the film in the package. Just like Kino’s 4Ks of Some Like It Hot and The Great Escape only have the movie on the 4K disc and supplements on the Blu-ray Disc because they don’t have the Blu-ray film rights, Criterion does.

While it’s true the current 4Ks Criterion have released contain both it’s too early for there to be a precedent set that they will always be that way. If Kino is going to do it to them, I think it’s only fair Criterion does it back.

Yes, I know.

I don't know that anyone here can say with certainty that Kino stuck it to Criterion with their 4K releases or if Criterion simply passed on them.

Great, since you know then I don't understand why there was any confusion with my original response.

And that's very true, Criterion were openly adamant that they had no interest in 4K. It still has to sting for someone else to release a shiny new version of something you worked hard to release yourself and it will certainly take sales away.

I don’t think any indie company re-releasing a movie in 4K is a slam dunk profit-wise at this point.

I have a feeling Criterion will upgrade the Orphic Trilogy and Antoine Doinel (I think a 4K UHD boxset was just announced a few days ago).
Saw this pic on Instagram recently (Don't know if it's real so take this with a grain of salt:

Anyone heard any news with a potential Dreyer boxset upgrade? I'm aching to get my hands on Ordet.

I'd definitely get that. Maybe that's why I've been avoiding getting Orpheus, because I assume they'd upgrade the trilogy

A Woman Is a Woman needs an upgrade too. That's an essential Godard classic that should be on Blu-ray already

To me it’s just basically Kino’s attempt at aggressively competing with CC.

I hope for a 4K UHD on Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me, The Princess Bride, Solaris, Videodrome, The Breakfast Club, Thief and Brazil.

Wait, where did they ever say they weren’t interested in 4K? As far as I know, the company line was always that they were keeping an eye on it but the time wasn’t right for them, or it didn’t make sense at the moment. I find it hard to believe they ever issued any kind of definitive statement like that.

It got a boxset-only blu-ray release in France FWIW.
