The fact that its a great film, on VHS, DVD, or otherwise, has nothing to do with it?

But there is something I need to ask all of you which is not really spoiler to the film but he kept apologizing for a film he directed called "Mimic" (Mira Sorvino, 1997 film). Was it a terrible film?

Oh, I disagree. It is more like Blade 2 than any of his others, which I think means that it went through a stronger studio filter.

Or I'll put it this way, Mimic was good enough that when I saw it in the theatre, the following week I tracked down a copy of Cronos at blockbuster. Just don't see it expecting Devil's Backbone...

Sorry not for me I just bought my copy. They've been going for good money on ebay though the last time I checked. Hope you can find a buyer.

Incidentally Blade 2 also sucks. I guess Guillermo and "studio influence" don't make good bedfellows. Not inspired enough in any one area to be a legitimate guilty pleasure (let alone legitimately good), and too polished and technically competant to enjoy so-bad-it's-good ironic status. Just...lame. Like Mimic. Of course I've found even his "passion projects" to date to be highly overrated, so it's no surprise I find his watered down mainstream output to be real drivel I guess.

I don't get the massive praise for Pan's Labyrinth, but I still enjoyed it and own it. Del Toro seems to be a really cool person, but out of the Mexican directors he is lumped in with (Cuaron and Inarritu, mainly), he is clearly the weakest. Cronos still looks interesting, but I don't expect him to ever reach Children of Men or Amores Perros levels of greatness.

Wheres Y Tu Mama Tambien?

agreed. Let's hope the Lovecraft movie isn't some James Cameron crapfest. He is a good guy and he has great love for what he does. It's just he hasn't got the other part down for me, something I like.

I will say that from what I have seen of interviews, del Tero seems like a perfectly likeable and genuine guy with his heart in the right place. It's just that thus far, nothing of his work has really done it for me. When I said overrated earlier it wasn't to say I haven't enjoyed any of his output (PL and TDB being my two favorites by far--surprise surprise), BUT I didn't really feel either of those films warranted the widespread lavish praise they generated.

Ok? I..believe you? It definitely eclipsed 3 (the general consensus amiright?)from what I remember, but then that's not exactly bragging rights. I think Max Payne may have even 'eclipsed' B3 (then again maybe not). It probably won't come as much of a shock that I'm not big on the Blade franchise even at its best. When it comes to mainstream big budget del Toro I defintely prefer Hellboy over Blade.

Well...since it's quiet this morning...I will go a bit OT (thanks Beta!)

Keeping just slightly with the notion of being classic and "cultured", not unlike CCs catalogue offerings...I was able to add a classic animation title and TV series title to my collection.

I've been waiting for Fantasia, not only for seeing a GREAT transfer of the film, but to FINALLY be able to see Destino. I saw a short clip and it looks like it has promise...Dali and Disney...go figure?!

And as far as I'm concerned...one of the greatest television writers (as well as screenplay writers) of all time...Rod Serling. I was able to get a copy of Twilight Zone Season One for $32.64 (tax included...free expedited shipping) from B & N (50% online coup). I collected the entire DVD version of this series and will keep an eye out for coups and discounts to add season 2 and the others, when they are released.

OK...you can all go back to sleep...back to "on-topic" material...

So...Sir Douche...

Meh, just because you don't like a director doesn't make them not very good at what they do. I prefer the same Del Toro films you do, but I certainly think PL is really quite good indeed. I'm still disappointed that the first Hellboy is as bland as it is, considering how perfect it should be on paper.

But there are few directors working today that I look forward to seeing their next movie as much as Del Toro.

It's a shame that most of the covers are BETTER than the films!

My next Criterion purchases:
Ernest Goes to Jail
Air Bud
Bio Dome

I don't know what is funnier the movies or the underlying satire.
