Unfortunately I don't have any advice for you on Zazie dans le métro, but as far as titles expiring: in addition to MifuneFan's guidance, films that Janus distributes in the United States more or less do not expire, whereas films from major studios that show up in the newly added newsletter will expire within a few months. Most other things that expire have terms divisible by three months. As an example, here's everything expiring at the end of this month, with apologies for any errors I may have made:

^During the sales from Criterion.com and B&N, Amazon also frequently price-matches around the same time, so you can decide where to buy.

There's not a waking moment where I don't "miss those days". Here's hoping Criterion lives on for another 50 years.

So Nicolas Cage revealed a new HD restoration was done for Bringing Out the Dead. I think it's safe to say a Blu-ray will be hitting at some point. The question is if it will be a Criterion or Paramount Presents line, and if it's Criterion will it be this year or somewhere in the next 5?

The last B&N sale was in November. (My dates may be wrong, but there's always a big fuss here and on other Criterion-related film sites when a sale is approaching.)
Amazon usually has them well under their list price. I don't even bother to wait for those sales much. I can get them on release date, tax included, from Amazon for around 30 bucks (I'm a Prime member). If I wait for the Barnes and Noble sale, I pay 20 for the movie, 5 or 6 for shipping, and sales tax, too. Comes out close to 30 anyway, and they take a good while to get it to me.

I don't know about B&N, but if you buy directly from Criterion on one of the 50% off sales, and spend at least $50, shipping is free. I'm assuming B&N is the same. Plus, if you buy directly through Criterion you get bonus points that can be used for a free title.

I believe that happened recently with Ratcatcher, the DVD version was unavailable for a short time and then the Blu-ray got announced.

The bonus points are pretty much the main reason I buy exclusively through the Criterion site.

I wait for sales, though. Figure out what I want months ahead of time, and walk into flash sale day with a game plan enough that I can order in the first five minutes without having to worry about stocking issues.

Then it's off to plan for the next flash sale.

RIP Peter Bogdanovich. I always loved his contributions for the special features of John Ford, Orson Welles and other old Hollywood films.

My big Criterion-related sadness with Bogdanovich was that he had made it clear that he wanted his director's cut of Texasville in the collection, and for whatever reason, it didn't happen. I understand that some feel even the director's cut is an inferior movie, but still, he had been pushing it back when not only he could've participated, but people like McMurtry and Cloris Leachman too. Maybe a sadly missed opportunity.

That's what I do. Yes, that limits my purchases to twice a year, but it also maximizes the savings and gives Criterion the biggest profit.

Is there a way to see which Criterion releases are in the standard cases and which aren’t? I’ve gotten really frustrated after All About Eve and Citizen Kane.

This website will have digipack listed next to their name. There are also a good number of product photos which shows you what they packaging is like. This thread is also good to ask.

I had the pleasure of meeting Peter Bogdanovich years ago at the Cleveland Public Library. He told stories about Old Hollywood and did impressions of John Ford, Cary Grant, Hitchock ("the elevator story"), and others. He presented clips from Notorious (The wine cellar scene) and The Last Picture Show and spoke about them. It was a lot of fun. He was very personable and approachable. I'm glad I got to meet him.

He signed my copy of This is Orson Welles:

I honestly liked him better as a film historian than a filmmaker. It seemed like Welles hated his guts near the end of his life, given how he portrayed him in his last movie. But that might've been Welles being jealous of a young director getting to make movies, whereas he still had to beg for funding
