Yeah. Since I can't picture referring to any stories of my own people as "authentic" characters written by others, I'm assuming it's ignorance, trolling, or both.

I really don’t see the connection between Tarantino’s female characters to Almodóvar’s female characters. For the latter, he is able to bring up issues of motherhood, collectivity, being a woman, trauma, etc., at least in the films I’ve seen from the late 90s to now. I don’t see that in Tarantino’s; I mainly see strong female characters à la Jackie Brown and both volumes of Kill Bill through a lens of drama/action films paying homage to exploitation films which, generally, “exploit” (or depict these topics in manner different than studios or art house) action, women, revenge, etc. Don’t want to start an argument more a conversation since I’m genuinely curious on that take. And as for the other poster, I understand wanting Almodóvar to focus on gay/queer storytelling like La mala educación, but his focus on transwomen is unlike any other filmmakers.

There's an "authentic" Chinese place in Albuquerque owned by three Mexican brothers that will literally fill every square inch of a Styrofoam takeout box with rice and Sesame chicken for $5.

They served Spanish rice instead of fried rice, so that's gotta count for something.

You're telling me this ain't an authentic honest-to-life African American? Color me shocked.

To be fair, Tarantino compared himself to John Brown on Charlie Rose. All the proof I need

John Sayles’ Lone Star and possibly Karyn Kusama’s Girlfight are coming to Criterion!

You can count the number of those on two hands. Search for them. . .

Yes. I have an all region player. I’m familiar with the UK release. That seems to be the way to go. I’m going to keep an eye out for a listing to pop up on eBay. Like Abdrewes mentioned, buying from AMZ UK is sadly no longer a reasonable option.

The $19.99 prices are either from PM'ing B&N's November sale, or from their July sale. Amazon just never raised the price on a lot of the releases. You can look at the deals page, and see most of them dropped to $19.99 on/around July 2021:

The only connection is somebody saying that they like both filmmakers' female characters and consider the two filmmakers dedicated to their characters' experiences. I feel the same way.

You are correct that these two filmmakers are influenced by very different genres and have very distinct voices. Tarantino being influenced more by 70's crime and exploitation movies, Almodóvar being influenced more by 50's melodramas and soap operas.

Tarantino has earned and enjoyed a reputation for shock. I think this causes people to overlook his other talents as a filmmaker. I realize for some people that that shock is so strong that it causes them to dismiss everything else in his films as window dressing to moments of violence.

I can accept that lots of people just don't like Tarantino's style of filmmaking for perfectly valid reasons. And if you think everything else in movies sucks, then you'll probably think his female characters suck too. I think he is invested in his characters and does frequently incorporate gender dynamics into his characters' plights and relations in a way that I related to, while also adhering to cinematic tropes that aren't really based in reality. If you dismiss his writing because you find it inauthentic or in service of lowbrow shocks that you look down upon, that's up to you.

That was your takeaway from this?
