Chan is Missing is the highlight for me! So happy Criterion is releasing more Asian-American films. Was hoping for a box-set of Wayne Wang's early films but this will do for now.

I'd describe myself as an "ardent" Delon fan (think that my username also should be a hint here) and I love it! Especially considering that he's an art dealer in the film.

Monsoon Wedding (Criterion BD) also—a film I revisit every year or two. It’s always enjoyable to “take friends to the wedding” who haven’t seen it.

I think I have a copy of that film on DVD. My wife is from India, so it was introduced to me as an Indian film, if you will. i.e., when I saw it, I lumped it in with other Bollywood I had seen. I remember some strange plot developments towards the end, but it was a good film and deserves a re-watch.

Funeral, Chan is Missing, and Double Indemnity are my most likely purchases.

This has been coming for at least half a decade, since Tampopo and FilmStruck were streaming Itami’s films. Maybe we could get A Taxing Woman double feature a few years from now?

It should also be noted that though the Criterion release of Mr. Klein is the strongest in terms of extras for English speakers, for any French speakers, the French release has a bonus disc including almost 5 hours of extras addressing Vichy, the Occupation and Pétain.

Wong Kar-Wai, The Tin Drum, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Menace II Society. Sometimes a Criterion release is ‘revised’ even with returning to the original intention, like not cropping out the male nudity in Fast Times.

There are different cuts Criterion hasn’t released though, like the 30 minute longer version of The Great Beauty, or the recut of Gomorrah, rearranging and trimming scenes.

I don’t believe the No Country for Old Men rumours based on one Instagram comment, but I’m confident Criterion has sat on titles for longer. We’ve not seen 4 Little Girls which Spike Lee suggested on Instagram yet either.

The Arrow boxsets came with a book as an ‘extra’ to get around the licensing restrictions with no video extras.

When watching the movie, you watch the movie much like you don't skip around to different parts. You don't listen to someone else or watch it out of order.
You’ll only get commentaries of Lynch releases not approved by the filmmaker, like Dune and The Straight Story. It was probably Lynch blocking the TV cut in the US/UK, and the Criterion releases come with a reprinted book chapter rather than scholarly essay. Though Lynch is not opposed to cues, like the insert with the Mulholland Drive DVD. Lynch seemed to block the Kino extras including commentary for Lost Highway, and the Twin Peaks DVD commentaries appearing on BD.

Double Indemnity in 4K. We're seeing 3 Billy Wilder 4K releases in just a few short months. I'm over the moon.

If I were to try to reverse engineer the cover, I'd say the characters are clearly cut from stills of the film, with digital drawing overlaid (cigarette, smoke, cloth touchups, etc).

Yeah, the overall style really goes well with the film, both in terms of the character he plays and the overt sense of paranoia in the film.

Yes, it's for sure an illustration. He's known for some great ones, many of which look quite photo-realistic.

Also really love his more colorful ones too

I don't know of this is Criterion's 'best' announcement in a while, but it feels to me personally their most exciting in a while, even though we knew Mississippi Masala and Mr. Klein were coming. Chan Is Missing is a cool announcement. They recently had several Wayne Wang films on the Channel but I didn't watch this one because it wasn't expiring...turns out it's probably because they owned the rights.

By the way, surely it's an oversight that no written content is included on the Double Indemnity release listing. I can't imagine they would put anything out without at least an essay, let alone a title as big as this. It's more likely to come with a pretty hefty booklet than nothing at all.

I'm guessing it's an oversight, and I'd imagine the second commentary might be included when it's released as well. Love & Basketball and The Piano had their extras changed when they were released.

I remember having Some Like it Hot and The Apartment on DVD and Double Indemnity on Blu-ray. I sold the first two but never upgraded to blus. I sold DI because I didn't like the lack of a proper menu. I'm glad to be able to buy all three in 4K this year.

With that said the whole lineup looks excellent.

Anytime there are 2 or more releases from Criterion in a given month I call it a huge success and this month does just that. Mr. Klein which was supposed to come out in December is finally here, and the Funeral is great. I can finally get rid of the crappy Fox Lorber DVD of that one.

Still no Cure, but again, I'm expecting that for October.

Also Fettucine was 100% full of it, as they mentioned to me that there was only one 80's Japanese title for 2022 and it was animated.

Did they say the name of the film?

And yeah, at this point it's been three months and there hasn't been a single thing from that whole business.

No, they didn't mention the name of the animated film. The only thing they got right was that there would be a 4K Scorsese film.

Stills are sometimes the foundation of his work. There's an article on most of these works on this site:

https://www.muddycolors.com/2022/01/...on-collection/

I appreciate that he does full scale drawings whenever time permits. He does nice dry brush work, but he does mention in the cases of Moonrise and Breaking Point that he didn't get to do his full thing really due to budget/time constraints. So it's unclear how much of it is still based and how much is drawn. I'm sure you can find out in the articles somewhere.
