I second this. Fantastic film and the opportunity to see this on the big screen is seems like something too good to pass up. The film had one of the word DVD transfers I've ever seen, but even with that, the film was enthralling from start to finish. It's one that that should be given a chance to have a new generation of viewers experience it.

Whenever someone mentions Samurai Assassin my mind first jumps to Shogun Assassin and I’m confused by the glowing reception.

Would love, The 47 Ronin (1941), to get a release! Don’t know the possibilities of it, but will keep hope until some monster here tells me it’s impossible!

That's a good one. I wish someone would release a few of Sadao Nakajima's films here.

Don't think you can get The 47 Robin, unless you're referring to a vintage version of Batman's sidekick. The 47 Ronin, maybe.

When I saw your post I actually believed there was a film called The 47 Robin from 1941 even though I knew there was a film called The 47 Ronin from the same year. I trust you way too much.

So what are the confirmed or likely upcoming new Criterion releases that haven't been officially announced yet?

Off the top of my head I know about these:

Confirmed:
Pink Flamingos
Bollywood box set
Bunuel's Mexican films
No Country For Old Men
Inland Empire

Likely:
Spellbound
After Hours
Mean Streets
Who's That Knocking at My Door
Alice Doesn't Live here Anymore
She's Gotta Have It

Anyone know any others?

Where's the confirmation, especially for NCFOM? It was produced with a 4K DI so a UHDBD release should be a no-brainer, but I would guess it has to come thru Paramount (always owned the international rights, now also has distribution rights for its domestic owner Miramax).

Someone posted about it recently, but I forgot where. I think it was an instagram account associated with Criterion that posted a NCFOM still and someone asked if that meant that it will get a Criterion release and they answered "yes."

The Man Who Wasn't There Has has been confirmed. Cure and Drive Me are also highly likely since Janus has had them in theaters. Highly likely is also Pat Garret and Billy the Kid and The Roaring 20's as there was some sort of list and nearly everything on it has come from Criterion and these two were on it.

There’s a vast space between confirmed new release and confirmed that Criterion has been sitting on it for a decade.

Really don’t think a third party comment from 4 years ago qualifies it as a “confirmed new release” though.

Eric Rohmer's Tales of the Four Seasons also feels like an inevitability, and there's Chess of the Wind as well. I'm not great at keeping track of confirmed and likely titles though. There was also an article stating Mike Leigh's Bleak Moments and the new 4K restoration of Naked would be coming to the collection.

Here are some that are not officially announced but confirmed by related parties:

Blast of Silence (1961)
Bleak Moments (1971)
Shaft (1971)
Pink Flamingos (1972)
Thank You and Good Night (1991)
Naked (1993)
Welcome II the Terrordome (1995)
Lonestar (1996)
Four Letter Words (2000)
Take Out (2004)
Medicine For Melancholy (2008)
Prince of Broadway (2008)
Mudbound (2017)
American Factory (2019)
Atlantics (2019)
Sound of Metal (2019)
The Worst Person in the World (2021)

As for After Hours, if I remember right, it has never been confirmed. The closest thing we got is this:

Petulia(1968)
The Devils
Pennies from Heaven(1981)
Twice Upon a Time
Amadeus 4K
After Hours
The Mosquito Coast
Funny Farm
Men Don't Leave
M. Butterfly
The Butcher Boy(1997)

M. Butterfly has already been announced from Shout! and Funny Farm is available in a double feature with Spies Like Us(George pointed this out) and Amadeus 4K is unofficially in the works(it's said around these forums), but George had this to say about the rest:
Warner's deal with the Saul Zaentz company has been extended making some of the above likely in the near future. Twice is a certainly a possibility due to it's cult following. The Butcher Boy is questionable as to whether it would make it's money back. Some of the other films have already been committed to Criterion and Shout! George really wants to do Pennies from Heaven, which would necessitate a 4K scan of the camera negative due to the sheer number of opticals in the film. WAC's 2022 hasn't been completely locked in so it might happen then. Overall, he's confident they'll get to all of them eventually, and hopeful that the Archive will last for many years to come!

At around 1:33:10:
LET'S GET PHYSICAL MEDIA #041 - YouTube
And the "some sort of list" DukeTogo84 mentioned above is this (the post was made in 2018 and I updated recent progress in red):

Quote:

Dreams (released)
Blow Up (released)
The Breaking Point (released)
Barcelona (released)
Magnificent Ambersons (released)
The Asphalt Jungle (released)
A Face in the Crowd (released)
Klute (released)
Day for Night (released)
Before Sunset (released)
Cat People (released)
Before Sunrise (released)
Round Midnight (will be released in April)
The Roaring Twenties
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
O Lucky Man
Lone Star (confirmed)
Captain Blood
Mean Streets
Scaramouche
The Cameraman (released)
Freaks
The Philadelphia Story (released)
Barry Lyndon (released)
Hedwig & The Angry Inch (confirmed)
Death in Venice (confirmed)
Bringing Up Baby (released)
Arsenic and Old Lace
Scarecrow (WB Archive released)

Obviously, since Scarecrow came from WB Archive, it's not really an exact science but this is a pretty good guide of "possible" titles.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off:

Who knows if Criterion still has it because it has been over 4 years since John Kapelos said Criterion were working on it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bueller was canned at this point.
