I seem to recall a story where Criterion showed the Coens the HDR master and the brothers were indifferent (Or at least not familiar with HDR at the time).

Both previous SC and Criterion discs were based on the same master. Blurb for the 2015 blu-ray:

New, restored 4K digital transfer, supervised by director David Lynch and director of photography Peter Deming, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray
The blurb for the UHD release avoids saying "New" to describe the resto:

I thought Criterion was the only label who actually "can" license stuff from Disney? Plus they already have the 4k DI so Disney wouldn't need to pull it out of the archives.

Not how it works.

That doesn't mean that Disney offer 4K rights.

I think a Disney-Criterion UHD deal is inevitable due to the Wes Anderson films at Disney. Maybe they’ll only get the Andersons but I don’t think it’s too farfetched that the get something at the same time.

Rushmore is streaming 4k Dolby Vision on Disney+ (in the UK at least). Seems a weird title for Disney to choose to remaster unless a Criterion UHD is in the works when you consider the more mainstream titles that are streaming HD only

Has there been any indication that they aren’t? Criterion’s relationship with them appears to be unique (similarly to their relationship with Warner).

On top of the Wes Anderson films, I think the Disney owned Hitchcock titles probably have a shot too. I expect when they announce Spellbound it will probably be a UHD at this point.

Criterion released West Side Story on LaserDisc back in the day, so the materials presented are probably from back then.

My Citizen Kane replacement and code arrived today, so I am even more excited for the flash sale! Hopefully it can be used in conjunction with the charter member discount... (I'm assuming the CK replacement discounts aren't being generated one at a time and the "same month" rule won't come into play.)

Yeah, that shouldn't be an issue. As far as I'm aware, the only issues are the 'like-for-like' coupons, i.e. charter subscriber coupons from the same round issued to multiple people attempting to be used in the same order. I believe I've got $20 in gift certificates and should earn a $50 with this next sale, so that should pay for some of those UHDs anyway...

Also:

Criterion UHD compression > Studio Canal UHD compression (when not done by FiM)

~Matt
The SC UHD of Le Cercle Rouge was a disappointment, but their Breathless release was, by most accounts, just fine despite not being a FiM job. I wouldn't expect an eventual Criterion UHD release to substantially improve upon it. Finch over at Criterionforum.org was willing to class it as a reference UHD disc, unlike the Le Cercle Rouge one.

Regarding future UHD releases, if I'm not mistaken, having a 4K scan available doesn't automatically make a title a UHD ready, since it could still require regrading for HDR. Also, if a 4K scan isn't sourced from the OCN, a UHD release is bound to show diminishing returns. With that said, Breathless, The 400 Blows, The Seventh Seal, and maybe 8 1/2 will likely all appear sooner rather than later. I don't think Contempt has actually been restored in 4K yet, although I could be wrong. I'm not sure about L'Avventura being an early UHD release. It's rather divisive and somewhat of an acquired taste compared to the main 'legacy' titles like The 400 Blows, Seven Samurai and so forth, so we'll see. It wouldn't surprise me if Blow-Up gets UHD'd first to be honest. The Red Shoes may not have been the most commercial friendly choice for an early UHD upgrade but it has strong 'demo' currency due to its lush technicolor cinematography, so it made sense. Le Cercle Rouge is a genre film, and those tend to sell well on UHD with a certain demographic regardless of how well-known they are. The demographic that generally purchases physical editions of classic arthouse fare is somewhat different in their habits and less techno-fetishist.

I'm just not sure what the market is for the more austere works of classic world cinema that lack strong genre elements (i.e. Au Hazard Balthazar, Ugetsu, L'Avventura, Late Spring, etc.). The 400 Blows and The Seventh Seal. Sure! Someone also mentioned Wild Strawberries earlier, but that one doesn't have a 4K scan AFAIK.

I would be okay with Criterion doing UHD releases of much older films without HDR. Yes HDR is incredible, but there are still benefits to using the new format in SDR assuming it comes from an upper level generation negative of course.

I'm hoping Criterion revisits the Hitchcock collection of films and does new 4k scans for them and releases them on UHD:

The Man Who Knew Too Much, Lady Vanishes, The 39 Steps, Foreign Correspondent. Then eventually Rebecca and Notorious again too (I'm going to guess the Lodger probably wouldn't benefit as much). The existing editions are fantastic already, but as these are some of the greatest movies in the Criterion collection in my view, I feel making them better can only be a great thing.

Also goes without saying nothing would make me happier than seeing Akira Kurosawa titles get the UHD treatment. I hope they make the required deals with the Japanese studios and start releasing them soon.

Some relatives from the US who had been planning since last year to make an India trip finally made it and I got the stuff I had sent over to their place, which includes a few C's from the August 2021 sale on Amz.

Also looking forward to Arrow's Sam Katzman set, I love me my B-budget monster features.

I know I’ve been a broken record on this but I’d love to see a return of The Third Man to the collection as a UHD release.

From what I've read, Lionsgate has retained the rights to that one (like they did with Ran).
