Question for the group: Why does Criterion (and some other boutique labels) always put their mono soundtracks into a 2.0 container? Why not just put them in 1.0 container? I always prefer my Center channel to handle mono instead of my F&R towers. In the end it isn't much of a big deal, I just have my AVR decode it (using Dolby Surround or DTS Neural) into a 1.0 anyways, but was curious as to why they do it like that.

Yes, mine was the same, except slightly pressed in when I got it. Some shipping tape should probably be used there to prevent the box from being pushed in easily, and also as a security measure obviously. I actually opened my box that way to take out the set. I think the box design itself could be part of the issue since it doesn't lend itself perfectly to taping like boxes with flaps that run across the whole length of the box.

My delivery arrived today and was the same. That's definitely a change from prior shipments, though fortunately the box was filled up this time so no harm done. But agree with MifuneFan's concerns.

Thanks for that! Never ordered from Vintage Stock before; I wish they were out here in the west!!! A couple of the stores above didn't actually have it in stock, or couldn't find it, but at least one did have it, so I got it shipped for under $20. Great deal. Very nice and friendly people, too! Thx again for the tip.

I'm not a fan of Dunham, but there are certainly films that will make you actually feel worse than TF. It's just become a running joke to take jabs at CC's release of "Tiny Furniture" and I was merely joining in on the party.

I think what you ordered is more important that anything. My order of a dozen was placed b/w 12:00 and 12:01 and still waiting -- all newer release items.

Question for the masses -- has anyone who ordered Hard Day's Night 4K in their order gotten shipment notice? This is the one item I can seen holding up many people if the replacement items haven;t been delivered to the warehouse yet.
It’s in my order (along with four other titles) and hasn’t shipped yet - and I put my order in in the first two minutes of the sale! I wonder if it is like Indicator sales where everything goes out in reverse order?

my package just arrived and it's the same box. I have no idea what you all are talking about w/ these box complaints. the bottom of the box locks pretty well. nothing is moving in the box either as the 3 titles I ordered are held tightly in place by sealed air pouches.

for whatever it's worth, I have never had anything less than perfect digipacks when ordering from Criterion. for me, it's another reason to hold out for their sales because in my experience, it is a guarantee that I'll get items in perfect condition.

Just a guess, but I'd say since 2.0 is more common than 1.0, it has a better chance to be supported correctly across a wider range of devices. It wouldn't surprise me at all if there were some decoders out there that handle 1.0 signals by sending it only to the left channel or something like that.

I wish Criterion would stop worrying about being overly diverse and just start releasing more Japanese movies again. I’m pretty sure Japanese cinema is one of the favorite categories of Criterion fans after all. They used to release almost one every other month for many years.

They’re sitting on at least 4 Kurosawa blu ray releases as far as I can count (maybe more when considering there are HD versions of Tiger’s Tail, Sugata Sanshiro).

Stray Dog
Red Beard
The Bad Sleep Well
Drunken Angel

Come on Criterion let’s get things going again!

Yeah, I've been saying this for years and years. The first hundred 100 Criterion titles had a TON of Japanese films. In the last ten years they have been very limited with their Japanese output. They have hundreds of Japanese titles, so it would be nice if they started releasing more. I'll probably be dead before they release Hunter in the Dark which is my most wanted title on Blu-ray. At least give us some more Hideo Gosha, Akira Kurosawa, Masaki Kobayashi, or even their one Kinji Fukasaku title. So much good stuff.

Yes to all of the above! I’d add Mizoguchi to the list too, there’s still a number of his that need release on blu from Criterion.

Even going back to the the DVD era Japanese films were among the highlights of Criterion’s selection. They played such a big role in making these classics available.

my criterion order arrived today

the dietrich/von sternberg set was kinda banged up. almost looks like a used copy. shrink wrap was tore up in places. i don't think it had to do with the shipment packaging, which was fine. oh well.

I just hope they eventually get back into releasing a ton of Japanese films. If they were to release a single Japanese film a month it would take over a decade to get to all the titles they have, that don't have a Blu-ray. It's insane.

Party of me wishes they would either sub license, or release more titles a month minus the special features if need be.

If the internals are fine, send orders@criterion.com an email. It's possible they'd be able to replace the outer box. My Hitchcock Box a couple years ago was worse that that and had a couple busted cases and they were able to help even though that set was just about sold out (or maybe just after it sold out) since I think I was in the last group that picked it up right as it came back into stock near the end of the sale (and it never came back again, now listed OOP)

Yes, I ordered A Hard Day's Night 4K. I was also thinking this might be the holdup... :le sigh:

They were really good to me when I had a similar issue with the Bergman box set. They got a replacement out quickly, but that was a while back now. Hope you have a similar experience.
