There are a ton of great films around the world for sure. However, for me personally, my priority has been and probably always will be Japanese films. That's just me and I only speak for myself. I've always been fascinated with Japanese films more than any other country and they end up being the ones I enjoy the most.

I was speaking for myself, it's only my opinion. I've watched movies from all over the world in arthouse theaters and at film festivals (and in more recent years on streaming services), and I just haven't seen a whole lot of them that I view as capable of standing toe to toe with the works of some of the greatest Japanese directors.

Japan has always been very prolific too and still has a very active homegrown cinema.

I assume you're being sarcastic, but this is a forum. If you're upset by people taking positions and some agreeing with them and others disagreeing, you can leave.

WORLD CINEMA is critical to film history and it's about time that you and others in this forum realize that. No matter what your opinions of me may be.
After the New York Times article using the social justice mafia-style tactics ("nice label you got here, would be a shame if anything happened to it") came out a couple years ago, Criterion has stated many times that they've given certain types of films higher priority, feeling that they've been wrongly ignored in the past. Only so many films can be released in a given month, so this means that other types of films are given lower priority. Some people love the new standards, others don't.

Also, it's fine to call people bigots and fetishists (possibly not on these forums, but in general), but you should understand that you might be wrong, and that people may just have different cultures and artists that speak to them more than the ones you prefer. It's also possible they have a valid point, but they're just not expressing it very gracefully. Leaping to bad faith conclusions about people that you don't agree with is common, but so gauche.

Criterion built their brand partially by catering to fans of Japanese cinema, and those fans have every right to grumble when the company moves in another direction.

Most people I know IRL watch on average 0 foreign films a year. In my opinion we’re all way ahead of the curve in terms of films from other countries

If all 195 countries of the world had Yojimbo or Seven Samurai level quality films I would gladly be buying such films, but sadly, in my opinion, not many do.
More ignorant and baseless comments coming from someone with no avatar or Blu-ray collection to support them.

Oh, yes! I love how everyone will support the sarcastic comments of a long resentful forum member, like Cremildo, piggybacking off my original sentiment. God, y'all are pathetic.

And now everyone is speaking for themselves? Before you were speaking for Neil and Criterion fans worldwide!

I'm done with it. Have a nice day!

My humble little flash order will arrive Monday! Picked up Salo, Red Shoes 4K, and finally Citizen Kane 4K (waited longer than I wanted because I didn't want to deal with that replacement program).

How the heck does an avatar or listing your Blu-ray collection here on the site give more validity to someone's opinion? Or how many Criterions someone buys at a time?

I advise you to take some medication. You seem to have forgotten it today.

I haven't read any of your posts because you've been on my ignore list for years for good reason, but I had to check this one since I got a quote notification. Get off that high horse, you're hardly an important enough member here to merit being "piggybacked off".

No sarcasm on my part in my question to Nori, either. You're crazy.

As for being resentful...

for whatever it's worth, I have never had anything less than perfect digipacks when ordering from Criterion. for me, it's another reason to hold out for their sales because in my experience, it is a guarantee that I'll get items in perfect condition.

Historically I agree their packaging has been a great argument for buying direct.
Apparently the USPS solution was rubber bands? There was no pillow or any padding in the box. On the plus side, if these weren't shipped Priority they would likely have arrived damaged. Tell me more about those "locking" boxes.

Oh, please! Trust me, you've been on my Ignore List for much longer (and on more than just this site).

You've been competing with me for years, starting with trying to create movie threads for independent and foreign films before me. You're still doing it, with little interest from forum members. I just don't care anymore. And I stepped away from this site years ago by choice (in spectacular fashion). But I was well-known, make no mistake. More so than you, that's for sure. Not that being an "important member" on this site means anything, anyway. Besides, you don't have to be important to have your ideas stolen, even simpletons know that. And there was definitely sarcasm in your comment. Anyway, I have errands to run. Toodles.

P.S. Even though I don't take any, stop shaming people who take medication for their mental health. It's not kosher.

Stray Dog

Come on Criterion let’s get things going again!
Using a phrase like "overly diverse" signifies to me that you're upset that they're releasing a certain type of film that you dislike without pointing out why you dislike it (for fear that you'll be called out on it).

What exactly where these "overly diverse" films you think Criterion should stop worrying about?

At the end of the day even if Criterion aren't releasing films I personally want, I'm still happy all sorts of films are being preserved.

Sure I want more Kurosawa and I'd buy Red Beard in a heartbeat. But the fact a wide range of film is being released on an easily available format like blu-ray is amazing, and pleases me regardless of what the films are. Criterion (and others) releasing film I haven't heard of broadens my horizons, and let's me potentially explore a certain countries/directors/genres film if I ever want to.

[Show spoiler]With all that said, PLEASE CRITERION UPGRADE MORE KUROSAWA.
