That’s exactly what we’re hoping for!

The DVD set was only missing five of his films. It'd be cool to have everything, but funding for his later projects became spotty, meaning rights are harder to secure for a lot of those.

Still, I shall continue to cross my fingers.

It'd be cool if they released more Kobayashi, though. The Eclipse set getting upgraded...Inn of Evil...A Hymn to a Tired Man.

The Fellini upgrade was 14 films. They had already released 5 of his films. If they released a Kurosawa boxset it'd be a bigger upgrade of titles than that. I'm not sure why you'd think that would be a slap in the face to customers.

I would buy a Kurosawa boxset but I'd still be a bit bitter seeing that they should have just continued releasing all the rest individually and I own all the individual releases till now. It's mind boggling that they opted to not release many of Fillini's films individually such as of Nights of Cabiria of all things! From the old Criterion this would have been unimaginable (not to mention they really ought to be starting them on UHD now, Toho too!).

La Strada was released after the Fellini set. Just because Cabiria hasn't come out yet, doesn't mean it never will. Same for any Kurosawa releases if a set were to come out.

I personally feel locking exclusive new releases in a set mixed with older releases that most fans would already have is a slap because they could limit the set to the titles that don't already have releases. This would cut costs to customers and the Criterion. It just seems wasteful to me. Just my opinion obviously.

I'd rather they included all of them. The price wouldn't be any different I think. No reason to shortchange a new set because they've already released some of them previously.

It's not like the Fellini or Bergman sets would've been cheaper if they took out all the previously released films. The Bergman set is already $150 during sales.

I feel the Bergman Set is what I'd hope it to be closer to. From a financial standpoint, even if you owned other releases, the cost to film ratio is an incredible value. The Fellini, while still good, is not as good of a deal if you already owned other releases. About on par with normal sale prices.

I'm not arguing against a Kurosawa Set, I'd just hope I wouldn't be buying a 20 film set that I already own half of from the same company. Paying again to buy the movies for a 2nd or 3rd time.

Doesn't seem to be a huge problem for most major artists or film series sets. I think you're looking at half-empty instead of half-full. Releasing a larger set allows the inclusion of titles that might not get released on their own. I think I only own 5 or 6 of Kurasawa's films, so I'd be down.

What if the set was 9 films and you owned 5 or 6 of them, but REALLY wanted 2 of the ones in the new set. Are you gonna spend 200ish bucks?

That's more my point.

I do see it both ways, and obviously this is all hypothetical anyways.

Honestly, I don't find it hard to resell movies, especially Criterions that hold their value. I've bought and rebought and then sold off so many albums on vinyl and CD, movies on VHS > LD > DVD > BD. After decades of this, you either roll with it, or skip it. It's certainly a decision I still make several times a year.

Lately I haven’t bought new releases that haven’t been funded by selling old stuff.

This. To fund the Bergman set, I sold the nine or so Criterion Bergmans I already had, and that actually brought me in about 90% of the cost of the set, so it was a whopping saver for me!

This is no judgement on anyone who keeps everything they buy, but the thrifty collector saves a bundle by cycling out anything they no longer want or need.

Same, when there was whispers of the Godzilla set I sold the discs I had for like 120 bucks and then just sat on the money for two years or so. It was cool.
