Let's make it a double, no triple, as I also re-watched the most recent restoration on the Criterion Channel a few months ago, and would love an up-to-date restoration and associated release, especially since this year is the film's 60th anniversary.

Even if we were to set aside the circumstances of early 1960's Communist Poland, in general and specific to the challenge of making a film with 'bourgeoisie' elements, its an outstanding debut that is as relevant and vital today as it was then – timeless.

All of the elements and techniques that Polanski brought to fore in later works are on display within Knife In The Water, but given the name Polanski, it's unlikely to happen, at least from Criterion, not this year, or only other.

Breathless quietly turned 62 yesterday. No updates to the Criterion page this morning.

Bless you MifuneFan, bless you. It's not much of surprise since we knew it was coming, but it will be interestering to see what we end up getting (just the bluray or also UHD?). Anyway, looking forward to what else is coming. Hopefully Pink Flamingos ends up happening as well.

Never seen Tales of Hoffman. Is it a safe blind buy if I like The Red Shoes?

Ok everyone. I’m back here to say that the 4K announcement will be Pink Flamingos. My reason for this has changed since Tuesday. It’s now because I REALLY want it to be.

Thank you.

I went to see it at the BFI a few years back and didn't understand a word of the singing. I mean, I literally, as a native-speaker, couldn't understand a word. So I bought the BD in order to watch it with subs.

Easy buy for me as an Archers enthusiast, but it's a different kettle of fish To the Red Shoes and all of their 40s output.

I highly doubt it, though you'd think it's been long enough to revisit it. Also, the creators were tied up in legal battles over getting payments going back like 40 years now. While I've owned every iteration and the last UK edition has the most extras of any of the BD releases, the Criterion has 2 original commentaries, a demo reel, and I believe a few other extras that have never appeared on another release. I had the LD, but I never bothered buying the DVD, and wouldn't bother now since it's non-anamorphic.

Before this UK edition went out of print, it was going for like $10 USD. You can probably still find it cheap somewhere.

Thanks a ton for this, this is the type of insight I was looking for. Shame we'll likely never get a blu-ray upgrade for this one.

Well now this comes as a surprise. Next you'll say you want a Kurosawa box.

Duke going to switch it up on you all one day and demand a box set of a famous Icelandic director like Friðrik Þór Friðriksson.

Yeah, After Hours would also be great. Wonder if it will be part of a Scorsese boxset.

Oh I'd take a Kurosawa set in a set, but honestly would prefer a Hideo Gosha one first. He only has one of his films on Blu-ray and Criterion has the rights to about 135 of his works, so it would be nice to get some of those out.

I was actually thinking about what's taking so long for a nice Greenlandic boxset from Erik Balling. Not enough films from Greenland.

Speaking of Japanese cinema, we need Gozu very badly. Nice companion to House imo.

I think I can safely say I’d consider doing many things I’m not proud of for a good blu of Nagisa Ōshima’s Gohatto (Taboo).

I'm actually shocked no one has released it on Blu-ray yet. One of Miike's most interesting works for sure and has a decent fan base.

I remember watching it in a theater in SF many years ago with an audience of about 11 people? By the end there was only 3 of us. I remember there being a really old woman who got up during the lactating breast part and she coldly said "this is disgusting". Made for a pretty memorable night.

The DVD of this had some sort of PAL issue, so it looked really weird. I've been hoping for a release of this done right.

Wasn't Oshima's Boy one of the clues from like 5 or 6 years ago? I wonder what happened to that release. (It also has a pretty nice HD scan already)

More Oshima, in general, is needed.

The early trilogy, "Cruel Story of Youth", "The Sun's Burial", and "Night and Fog in Japan". Criterion has had "Boy" and "The Ceremony" for streaming since their Hulu days, and there are so many others, and we could use a BD upgrade of "Empire of Passion", too. "Max, Mon Amour" and "Taboo" would be most welcome.

Well no 4K of Pink Flamingos

https://www.criterion.com/films/31320-pink-flamingos

But hoping the “and more” includes some early short films.

Quote:
New 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director John Waters, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
Two audio commentaries featuring Waters, from the 1997 Criterion laserdisc and the 2001 DVD release
New conversation between Waters and filmmaker Jim Jarmusch
Tour of the film’s Baltimore locations, led by Waters
Deleted scenes, alternate takes, and on-set footage
Trailer
English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
And more!
PLUS: An essay by critic Howard Hampton and a piece by actor and author Cookie Mueller about the making of the film, from her 1990 book Walking Through Clear Water in a Pool Painted Black

New cover by Eric Skillman
