They told me to clean the disc in which I....

Turns out they were actually smudges, but getting such a dirty disc fresh out of the shrink makes you wonder what's going on at their plant. I'll be inspecting all discs from now on which I should not have to do.

I've seen smudges (including fingerprints) on everything that's ever been on a disc. Video games, music cds, movies, all of it. I've always wondered how that happens, but I've never been super concerned because they're easily wiped away.

Someone posted a reply from Criterion that stated that every disc is placed in case by hand. I believe Criterion have their discs manufactured by the same plant(s) as other labels/studios, but the packaging of these discs are probably done elsewhere, and it's at that stage where this quality control issue might be happening. Criterion aren't the only ones I've seen with disc issues, but it definitely seems to be more prevalent with them.

All we can do is keep letting Criterion know about this until they realize that there is an issue here, and things need to change. Although, there's probably little incentive for them to do so until it starts costsing them more money (lost sales, replacement discs, etc..)

I think that was me.

I appreciate that Criterion is one of the few companies that continually stands by their products and offer replacements of damaged cases, booklets, discs, etc. And I know they stand by their product even years after purchase as they've come through for me several times now. But when you buy something brand new -- and from one of the pricier companies -- is it wrong to expect the item to be in "new" condition?

Like many of us here who have a large collection, I've begrudgingly accepted the current state of crappy packaging and new items arriving slightly dented or damaged. I also take into consideration that I'm often getting a good deal on an item and have reasonable expectations. Now I typically only ask to return an item if the damage to the case or booklet is severe, or if the disc looks badly damaged, so I'm really not that much of a stickler. I don't collect steelbooks or slipcases either.

So when I contact Criterion about this brand new very scratched disc I just received it really feels like gaslighting to be told to try and clean it. Which of course was the first thing I had done because I'm not an idiot or a monster. Haha. I own nearly 300 Criterion releases and used to buy their LDs as well. This just seems like a really strange new wrinkle since it's clearly a problem with their production. I have thousands of discs and I shouldn't have to recheck them annually for playability because they sent me damaged brand new items once. How do you even respond to this? "[We are] happy to send you a replacement disc if needed."

Yeah...I agree.

Welcome to planet Kamino where clones spend all day and night placing each Criterion disc into its case by hand.

With that being said, Criterion does have great customer service though. My copy of The Piano got crushed by the legendary USPS. Criterion shipped me a new art litho and Scanavo case within a few days.

That’s a nice shelving unit. It looks like you could get away with putting in a second shelf for each section to double up the capacity.

Looks like an IKEA Kallax 5x5 -- or more likely the prior Expedit which had slightly thicker outer boards and looked sturdier even though Ikea said they had the same load capacity

The original didn't have moveable shelves so the 13x13 inch space was sort of fixed and wouldn't hold 2 levels. I think these are units many of the LP collectors liked because is was nearly perfect size for std LPs

They are 15+ inches deep so very easy to do a front/back levels either both sides facing out if using it as a Room Divider

Or against a wall 2 layers of cases if you don't mind having part of the case hidden. Many folks have used 4-5 inch riser for a back shelf layer which raised the 2nd layer up so they could be seen well AND acted as a stop for the front layer

In the Bedroom (2001) is a film Criterion should look into imho. I don’t know the studio or the rights situation though. Powerful drama and a very unique film.

Yes, Kallax.

What I waste in vertical space I make up for with the front/back arrangement as mentioned. In other places the height is useful, like for where I want to include tall box sets within a shelf (for Arrow, say).

The risers are an interesting idea, but for now I have room, so I'll stick with this and keep access simple.

I don’t know who currently owns it, but Wikipedia says it was distributed by Miramax. But I would love that and Little Children to get a release, even if to just celebrate Todd Field finally making his third film!
