Well, beside the fact that every other post in this thread is someone saying what they think should or should not be added to the collection (or upgraded to Blu-ray, in this case), regardless of whether or not they've seen it. Summertime is not even Top 5 David Lean and/or Top 10 Katharine Hepburn. Honestly, I hadn't even heard of it before now. And much like Vigojean finds it offensive that Devil in a Blue Dress would be added before those other films. I find it...strange that Summertime would be added before, say Adam's Rib, Little Women, Stage Door, or even Morning Glory. But that's just my opinion. And I may end up changing my mind after seeing it.

Dead Presidents better than Devil in a Blue Dress? Now you're just talking nonsense.

I also tend to agree about The Virgin Suicides, seeing as how the Blu-ray was just released four years ago. But Coppola only has two great films to choose from, and I'm assuming they can't get the rights to Lost in Translation.

All that being said, I plan to pick up all the July releases except for Summertime, which I'm still on the fence about because I haven't seen it. If you ask me, that's the one that doesn't belong. But anyway, it's streaming on HBO Max, so hopefully I'll be able to watch it before release date.
I just watched Summertime on HBO Max over the weekend, and I found it to be a great film (loved Hepburn’s performance) and utterly gorgeous to look at, between the eye-popping Technicolor and sumptuous Venetian setting. Not sure why you would say you “don’t think it belongs”, especially when you haven’t watched it. I’d say it absolutely belongs.

Largely an unsung masterpiece. I saw it three times in the theater.
I want that, and also to complete Scorsese’s religion trilogy with the even more unsung Kundun. What a fantastic film, as close to purely visual as Scoesese’s ever made.

This makes no sense. Do you just take other people's opinions as your own?

Summertime was David Lean's favorite of his films and Hepburn herself felt it was one of her best. I was going to say I'm surprised you've never seen it but it has been exclusively, in the US, with Criterion for decades and is an upgrade from the 1998 edition, so they're not adding it. It does show on TCM on rare occasions. It's your 1950's American goes to Europe, in this case Venice Italy, and finds romance movie. So it's a dated romance but still works wonderfully because of the talents involved.

And Hamaguchi said it was a pretty huge budget for him.

Summertime doesn't belong? Never heard of it? Not good enough? Get out with all this nonsense. While Summertime may not be David Lean's best film, it's terrific and quite underrated.
Summertime is an interestering film in a lot of ways as it reflects and is a precursor to Lean's skills for incorporating location as a character and as development to the central drama of the protagonist, an element that is evident in his following work. Katherine is her usual splendid self and manages to convey so much emotion and longing that goes hand in hand with her terrific chemistry with Rossano Brazzi. Also, Lean's penchant for color is rendered with such beauty and tenderness with the Venetian backdrop. While the similar Brief Encounter is the better film, Summertime is worthy companion piece and manages to leave its mark.
I'm sure the film doesn't deserve an upgrade though since it isn't top 5 Lean material though.

oh come on, as far as I know this is it's Blu-ray debut, of course a rescan/transfer should happen, the hidef version has/is up on the Criterion Channel; the colors should look great as such!

Summertime is a classic romance from a major filmmaker, and a visually beautiful film. Of course, it deserves to be in the collection (it already is, as pointed out) and on HD.

I know, I was being sarcastic. The member I was responding to implied that it didn't belong/shouldn't get an upgrade.

It's your opinion, but it's an ill-informed one. You can't really say it's Top 5 or Top 10 anything if you haven't actually seen it. And if you've never even heard of it, well, that kind of sullies your credentials seeing as it's actually one of David Lean's most famous films and pretty much laid the blueprint for every subsequent "single woman finds romance and in the process find herself while visiting a foreign land" type movies.

But that's okay, you continue to stomp your feet and display all kinds of ignorance while lashing out at anyone who challenges you. You're only embarrassing yourself.

Isn't Summertime the movie where Katharine Hepburn contracted conjunctivitis from falling into the canal in Venice? I've actually never seen the film. Definitely heard of it, but it's one of Lean's films that's managed to elude so I'd more than welcome a Criterion blu-ray.

And who cares if it doesn't have the same status as other David Lean epics like Lawrence of Arabia or Doctor Zhivago? I've never understood the logic that a certain film can't be given a blu-ray release (from ANY label) until every other major film has already been given the same treatment. Labels are gonna release what they're gonna release, and there could be a number of other factors like licensing issues, so it's a pointless argument. Sure we all have our wish lists, but to say "I can't believe this film was given a release before X film" is rather asinine. It's not like this movie is keeping other films from being released lol.

Criterion actually has a set number of films they're going to release before they retire....
