This is why I sold off my John Waters Blu-rays. I noticed they all had 4K remasters.

And I know for a fact Pink Flamingos was to be released in 4K by WB before they gave it to Criterion (they proably realized it would sell better to niche collectors instead of people waiting for an inevitable price of $5-$10).

So I have a sneaking feeling that a Pink Flamingos 4K release isn't out of the question. But without HDR/Dolby I don't see many people upgrading- in which case I wouldn't be surprised if they did a John Waters 4K Trash Box Set or something to entice people to doube dip.

As much as I hate when some films are treated as a special feature, I really wished Okja came with Bong Joon Ho's debut film Barking Dogs Never Bite.

On one hand, I honestly think this is pound-for-pound one of the best monthly announcements from any boutique label ever (recency bias blah blah blah). Every label usually has 2-3 "eh" titles on any given month, but these are all bonafied heavy-hitters that could each be standouts of their own month if they were released separately, and most of them 4K to boot.

On the other hand, I already own most of these (all except Drive My Car/Okja obviously) and the blu rays all look good/great/fantastic, so I have a hard time getting excited about upgrading them all to 4K already. Especially for something like Devil in a Blue Dress that's still sealed on the unwatched pile from a recent Indicator sale. Summertime is a big win regardless though.

But who am I kidding, these will all 100% end up on my shelf eventually. Great month.

Okja was a surprise in 4k. I don't remember liking it a ton back when I watched it, but now it's finally freed from, what, five years of streaming only purgatory? That's a win thanks to Criterion.

Glad to finally have confirmation of the July releases after that interminable wait!

Summertime better sell like gangbusters, since everybody is such a HUGE fan of it now.

How do you know for a fact that WB were going to release it on 4K? John Waters had only said that WB were interested in releasing Pink Flamingoes years ago, nothing about them releasing it in 4K.

Here's the interview, he straight-up said they called to let him know they were doing it.

https://www.insidehook.com/article/m...pink-flamingos

Everyone read this as a WAC release confirmation but it's possible they were simply restoring it and calling for his involvement, and he wasn't aware Criterion were releasing it yet. I'm inclined to believe Criterion were always going to release it and he didn't know. WB would be getting it ready for the format to pass on to them anyway.

Not to mention releasing it in the wrong aspect ratio. It was shot for 1.85 widescreen, not 1.37 Academy.

Don't you know the world revolves around JWFORD? It does you know. Look it up.

Even though the Summertime aspect ratio will be 1.37:1 it thankfully won't harm the film since it was filmed in that ratio, with an expectation to be matted in the theaters at 1.85:1. You'll just get that extra space on top and bottom or you'll have to do what mifunefan mentioned earlier and matte your own screen. I can now replace my Japanese copy of it.

These situations are at least better than anamorphic films in the wrong ratios. You can't fix missing images.

Hopefully you enjoy it. It's a sweet and moving film anchored by Hepburn's affecting and truthful portrayal. Let us know what you think.

Not to play the "My uncle works at Nintendo" card (really), but I know someone who said this was being released by Warner Bros. originally. I'm guessing the idea was dropped because while this film is iconic and notorious, it's not The Exorcist level of popular enough to perhaps release a full blown 4K release through their home media label. MGM has Showgirls (I bet you can't spell MGM backwards), which is equally notorious and iconic, but Showgirls has full blown nudity so its no wonder its one of their best seller. Pink Flamigos has a drag queen bl*wing a dude and eating dog chocolate.

With Criterion at least you've got a few things going for it like being a legacy title (LGBTQ+), a part of a John Waters slate of releases, and then the niche collectors on top of that who will get it to complete their collections or out of curiosity. Plus the respect that Criterion further gives lesser known films will accentuate Pink Flamigos to those who might not be familiar with it (which it isn't really a lesser known film). I remember being disappointed when I heard this was being released by Warner Bros as this would mean it wouldn't join the other Divine & John Waters titles in the collection, but now it is I guess.

Now it's just hoping a 4K release itself isn't ditched.
