Janus will be screening the new 4K restorations of the Three Colors Trilogy in the summer. I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion were to upgrade the set to 4K later this year or next year.

If this year I'd bet money it'd be a November release to coinside with the B&N sale.

Janus and Sideshow have also acquire the Dardennes Brothers film 'Tori and Lokita', which also premiered at Cannes this year and won the 75th Anniversary Prize.

What are the chances of getting any Tarkovsky film in 4K?

I can only think of Ivan's Childhood having the greatest chance of a 4K UHD ("...was created on a Spirit 4K from a 35mm fine-grain master positive"). The others are either 2K restorations (Mirror) or older HD restorations (Andrei Rublev). Question of whether either Criterion or Mosfilms are willing to restore the others in 4K and add HDR for the UHDs is something that has to be considered as well.

The Sacrifice was restored in 4K but that is with Kino Lorber.

Out of all the Tarkovsky titles, I'd say that either Andrei Rublev or Nostalghia are in the direst need for a new restoration. I was fine with Andrei Rublev, but Nostalghia was a bit hard to sit through with the outdated presentation. Solaris would also be another one that would probably have a great benefit from a new restoration as well.

EDIT: Realized Stalker was a 2K restoration, my bad.

Stalker is also a 2k master, would require a new scan.

Eggers released The Northman today on 4K and he even used Andrei Rublev for inspiration. I'm sure someone is buying The Northman today and also thinking about that film and wishing there were 4K's of it and Ivan's Childhood, Solaris etc by Criterion. I mean they have 0 4K Tarkovsky, Kubrick, Kurosawa, Ozu, Mizoguchi, Bresson you name it what are they doing over there anyway?

Take it up with all of the people who own those films. It’s not like these things just magically happen.

It’s funny that Criterion was previously criticized for not releasing 4K when hardly anyone else was. Now that they’re doing more than anyone else (or at least as many) they still get criticized. Those bastards!

And let's give credit where credit is due in proper attribution: Eggers didn't "release" this movie on 4K, correct? He directed the movie. But the distributors/studio (Universal/Focus Features, in this case) actually do the work to get it "out there." And then there are all the people who, yes, need to work on preserving/upgrading these older titles...which many of us easily complain about, but I'm sure they have good intentions when doing. And that all takes money (and yes, enough other bubbles of support and potential sales speculation).

Criterion and Pathe have teamed up to perform a new 4K restoration of 'Le Samourai'.

Actually I think you are wrong! I just saw him walking down the street carrying a box of blu-rays. It looked like he was heading toward the Best-Buy or Adam and Eve....

Hopefully won't turn out like the earlier restoration a decade ago. Can't wait for a 4K UHD of this if one is already in the plans

I have zero faith that Le Samourai restoration will turn out good.

This is an interesting development because I believe Criterion passed on Pathe's restoration for the blu-ray release in 2017.

Nearly three years since the last Ozu title. Even longer since the last Mizoguchi release. Really hoping we get something this time 'round.

Also seeing a lot of Bresson titles being released across the pond. Would be nice to get a stateside release of Procès de Jeanne d'Arc.

And, as always, I pray for an upgrade of When a Woman Ascends the Stairs.

Pretty sure at this point Criterion is waiting for me to buy the Korean release of Floating Weeds before announcing it. It is my favorite Ozu, and I'm so glad I at least got to see the restoration of it in theaters several years back. Many summers now, I used to list it among my guesses for those months, but have pretty much given up on doing that now.

Yeah, I was sure an upgrade would follow shortly after I bought the DVD in the Feb 2018 flash sale. I guess I'm glad I decided against waiting lol

If Criterion was involved it should wipe the floor with the last restoration. It was so bad Criterion turned it down and used their old master for blu ray, I doubt they would get involved with the new 4k restoration just to let it be shitty again.
