I'm a little miffed at the fact that they're likely going to release all the WKW titles one by one after buying the box set, but I look on the bright side of things:
Since they're individual releases, they'll be packaged better.

What if people go in the opposite direction and force Criterion to second guess their decision to "upgrade" In The Mood For Love?

I could be wrong, but I feel like the Infernal Affairs Trilogy is still somewhat niche compared to a property like Jackie Chan's Police Story trilogy, which is getting released on UHD by Eureka.

I'll certainly be getting Malcolm X, though that art is...well it's never been a film with great promo art but that's probably the worst of a bad bunch. Oh well, it's not of much importance. I'll probably get Daisies too, but I'll wait and see how it compares to the Second Run release; hopefully Criterion will get round to releasing the other Chytilova films that they have (Wolf's Hole and Fruits of Paradise in particular) sooner rather than in a decade's time as they're known to do.

In the Mood for Love 4K feels unlikely to be worth it; Nova Media decided not to release it on 4K as the upgrade was so minimal and the French and German UHDs look like evidence of that, though I've admittedly not seen them myself. If it turns out to be a worthwhile upgrade then I'll be all in, but right now this looks as close as Criterion gets to a cash grab - timed to take advantage of what will probably be a good showing in the decennial Sight & Sound poll and the recent popularity of the homage in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

The original Cape Fear is a decent film but for me, not quite in the same league as the Scorsese one.

The differences are best described here:

Have to say it’s the first month I’ve been excited about (November).

I wish they would release more foreign language movies. A favorite of mine is mani ratnam’s Bombay - a very very pertinent movies considering all the tribalism happening right now that reeks of the same hatred as at the time of partition.

I had some what a different reaction as I just bought the blu last month. Im all for individual releases as I would love to see Chungking Express be next for the 4k treatment.

As for Infernal Affairs I had to do a fist pump when i read that news. Its easily the belle of this months ball for me. It should have been a 4k release but the double dip is coming in the not so distant future. Even Criterion has to make money to stay in business.

3 Denzel movies this year and i guess they can’t get him to participate in any of the releases, which is disappointing

Yeah, I can understand that, though you arguably have the better release anyway, in terms of grading and such.

I don't see Criterion releasing/upgrading ALL the WKW titles for singular 4K release, I don't think there's a market for all of them on their own. It's more likely they foist another complete 4K box set on you lot sometime in the next couple of years.

I say "you" because of course I didn't buy into/approve these new "restorations." And I'm not the director, so I guess I don't have that privilege! But I would like to see the original releases preserved, so I'm holding onto my previous mix of U.S. and global releases.

I maintain that it's a dumb move not to immediately release INFERNAL AFFAIRS in 4K...unless they didn't get the 4K home video rights? Which wouldn't be surprising, based on how much KINO has sweeped up 4K rights in the past couple of years.

True. Maybe deep down I’m just whining about the wait for After Hours.

I like Denzel, but the trailer I watched made it look cheesy. Also, it doesn't seem very well received as it only has a 6.7/10 on IMDb.

Trailers are promotional tools, don't let that completely decide whether you should see this. I would say that this is one case where you should ignore the promo materials and just SEE IT.

Scorsese originally had Schindler's List while Spielberg had Cape Fear. Scorsese felt, not being Jewish, that Spielberg was a far more appropriate choice given the subject matter, so they effectively swapped projects.
