For those who enjoyed Chaplin's "Modern Times"...the very expensive Chaplin Essanay and Mutual Collection (inc. the 90th anniversary) are on sale on Amazon. This is his older work. These typically are $49-$69 and now they are $25-$29 and probably will never come out on Blu-ray. This is the lowest I have seen of these two sets.

For those who are wondering about the difference, the 90th Anniversary utilizes the Carl Davis score and includes the missing footage for the Mutual films and were restored. The Essanay and Mutual is a very good set with extra documentaries but the Mutual is the pre-restorization and doesn't have the new footage but yet you get the Essanay titles. If you can get both, that's great but one over the other...that's a tough call.

Closest showing of that is in a theater 3 hours away from me. Looks fantastic though, let us know how it is!

I snatched these up the moment I saw they were on sale a couple a days ago

Its a shame that they don't have a set with the 90th anniversary mutual films AND the Essanay films but at these prices I was ok with ordering both.

The whole Leopard debacle got me thinking about other examples in which Criterion's BD isn't far and away the superior release (mainly with regards to transfer). The only others I could really think of are M (Many prefer the less contrast-y MoC transfer, myself among them); Easy Rider from the BBS set (Sony's transfer appears more or less identical); Antichrist (doesn't look discernibly better/worse than the French BD, going by dvdbeaver's grabs); and maybe Breathless (some seem to prefer the more 'naturalistic' look of the Studio Canal BD). Most of these are highly debatable, of course. Any others?

So it would appear that to get everything, that I'll have to repurchase the Mutuals, as I have the older set with the Essanys and the Mutuals.

Maybe at $25.99...now is the time.

Thanks kndy!

Really? I would think that Peoria, IL would be showing it. I've always thought that Peoria was a fairly large place, no? I'd wager money that more people have heard of Peoria, IL than where I live in Warwick, RI.

Anyway, I enjoyed "127 Hours" quite a bit. I even got teary-eyed at the end since I'm a sap. The worst part of the film was finding out that the real Aron Ralston was a fan of Phish's music.

Here's my quick rating of the Danny Boyle-directed films I've seen, if it matters to how much I enjoyed "127 Hours."
  • Trainspotting... 4 out of 5
  • 28 Days Later... 4 out of 5
  • Millions... 3.5 out of 5
  • Sunshine... 3.5 out of 5
  • Slumdog Millionaire... 3 out of 5
  • 127 Hours... 4 out of 5

I'm with you on Slumdog Millionaire. It was the only one of Boyle's films I didn't like.

Well, it's not that I don't like it, but it was "average" for me. I do like it, and I do own it, so maybe our thoughts differ slightly.

My rating of "3" does mean that I like it, but it also means that it wasn't any better or worse than I was expecting it to be, ya know? My biggest qualm with Netflix is that you can't rate films by the half-star like you can on Blockbuster Online. With Netflix's rating system you either like a film with '3 stars' or you don't like it with '2 stars'. There is no in between with their rating system, which is a bit frustrating.

Agreed. It's very average.

Although, Miss Pinto is very nice on the eyes

I have much worse traits

I had no idea there were Phish references in this movie until now.....

for confessional purposes,
[Show spoiler] I've seen Phish 55-60 times in concert.... and my 1 year old has already seen them 3 times

All I can say is HOLY CRAP!!! I'm not sure I would admit that, though, Beta.

The reference in the film, though, comes along at some point when one of the two girls that James Franco's character meets while out canyoneering mentions that he'll never get a girlfriend if he listens to Phish, or something like that. His character might also be wearing a Phish t-shirt, as well. I'm not too sure, though.
