I was in wait-and-see mode on the Wong Kar Wai box set. The faulty discs needing possible replacement being a big reason. But it was also partially because I wasn't sure I wanted all the films. A local cinema had theatrical showings of all the films in the set and I went to most of them and really enjoyed them. Some I hadn't seen at all, others I hadn't seen in a long time.

Now I feel like I would be down for a WKW box set; but since I just watched most of his films I'm not eager to revisit them again right away. So once again, I feel comfortable to wait and see. Maybe a 4K box set with non-faulty discs and superior packaging will come out, or maybe by the next time I feel like revisiting his works there will just be individual releases of the more popular films and I'll pick those up.

Big Denzel fan, so I'll probably upgrade at sale time. Never seen the Infernal Affairs trilogy or In the Mood for Love, so definitely interested in those releases.

St. Elsewhere was my favorite drama show of the 1980's and loved seeing Denzel make it on the big screen.

Since I already own Malcolm X my only interest in the releases is to pick:

Now I can go in the corner and cry like a baby over never seeing another Kurosawa BD release. I'm losing it man!

Too many more important things to release like the Netflix catalogue.

How will you feel when, after purchasing the 4K releases of "In the Mood for Love" and (presumably) "Chungking Express", you're told to purchase the 4K re-release of "World of WKW" (poor packaging and all), so you can get those same two films, as well as the rest of his films, in glorious 4K SDR?

Now is the time for you to start predicting which best titles Criterion will save for last this year as we approach the announcement of the December 2022 lineup.

I found this tweet…

December’s usually pretty lowkey. Last year, it was literally just 3 titles (one of which was a 4K upgrade). I wouldn’t get my hopes too high for anything huge. November gets all of the goodies because of the B&N sale

December is always an anticlimactic month, so I wouldn't expect anything mind-blowing.

That being said, we are still waiting for:
  • Barbet Schroeder movies — "More" and "The Valley (Obscured by Clouds)" have been heavily rumored since phantom pages appeared in the good ol' days.
  • David Lynch movies — "Inland Empire" is 100% coming. I assume the remainder of his films will be upgraded to 4K over the next year or two.
  • The Eyes of Orson Welles — crickets
  • Girlfight — I saw a database entry for this one. This was either rumored or wishful thinking.
  • The Heroic Trio — and probably more Johnnie To films if I was a betting man.
  • Janus Films tours/acquisitions (in recent memory) — "Distant Journey" and "Ikarie XB-1" are coming at some point, as is Rohmer's "Tales of the Four Seasons" (very surprised it hasn't been announced yet). Janus acquired North American rights to "EO" and "Tori and Lokita" (this past year's Cannes), so they should be here soon. The 4K remaster of "Three Colors Trilogy" has been heavily promoted over the past few weeks, so maybe that will come to home video in glorious 4K UHD. Also, Janus has done two retrospectives recently for the films of Marta Meszaros and Kinuyo Tanaka. Some, or all, of these films may be released, but I'm not holding my breath.
  • Jim Jarmusch movies — "Coffee and Cigarettes" is supposed to be on the way. I assume the remainder of his catalogue is likely to be released at some point (even if we have to wait for existing rights to expire).
  • King Lear (Godard)
  • Martin Scorsese movies — "After Hours" and "Mean Streets" have been heavily rumored. "Cape Fear" is also rumored.
  • Medicine for Melancholy
  • Netflix movies — I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Criterion eventually releases the entirety of Netflix's critically acclaimed original movies. That being said, "American Factory" (a perfect candidate for a December release), "Atlantics", and "Mudbound" are confirmed to be coming. Someone added a database entry for "Mank". Not sure if rumored or just wishful thinking.
  • Olivier Assayas movies — "Demonlover" should have been here by now. He's another candidate for "all of my movies will be released by Criterion at some point".
  • One False Move — Kino was supposed to have the rights but they didn't get them. It's assumed to be with Criterion. (Fantastic ****ing film, by the way. Just watched it for the first time a few weeks ago.)
  • Solo con tu pareja
  • Spellbound — rumor has it that the negative is in bad shape.
  • Spike Lee movies — "4 Little Girls" and "She's Gotta Have It" have been confirmed/rumored for a while now. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Criterion had his entire catalogue at this point.
  • Thank You and Good Night
  • Todd Haynes movies — "Velvet Goldmine" and "Velvet Underground" have been confirmed as coming (at least one of the two is). I have a feeling Criterion will release more of his films. If "Carol" doesn't get an eventual release, I will literally eat the keyboard I'm typing with right now.
  • Wong Kar-wai movies — after today's 4K announcement for ItMfL, and given the fact that the films are available on 4K UHD in Europe, it appears very likely that Criterion will re-release every film in the format.
  • World Cinema Project movies — more sets are 100% coming. I actually went through the Film Foundation's site a few weeks ago and added every WCP film to the database (even the shorts that will only be released as extras).

I know for certain that I'm missing more rumor mill titles. Assume that any DVD release still in print is a likely candidate for an upgrade.

I'm honestly surprised I managed to come up with these given how out of the loop I've become with everything.

Girlfight rumor was from Maggie Renzi and John Sayles, who produced the film.

Blast of Silence, a quintessential Christmas noir, is another strong possibility. In October 2020, Lee Kline revealed on his podcast The Dead Pixel Episode 2 (31:34-35:30) that they were working on a new scan of the film. He said "next year"(35:24) in it, so I was expecting it to be one of the December announcements last year, but apparently they pushed it back since.

There's the Lone Star (1996) that was 'announced' along with Girlfight. Hope we can get that one too.

Made me laugh... but actually l love the packaging, even if it takes longer to get a disk out and carefully close it all up again afterwards. It's an antidote to endless rows of plastic cases (although I do love the Scanavos).

Sad to say this is the first month I can recall when the announcements left me totally underwhelmed, especially after all the build up and expectation. And where the hell is I Know Where I'm Going!

Edit: At least the card the outer "box" is made of is a lot thicker than Criterion's standard flimsy stuff!

I'd be nice is Criterion stopped trying to be unique with their box sets and just make something practical that fits on shelves. The Godzilla set, while beautiful, blesses us with sliding discs, glue becoming dislodged and coating the discs, and after 3 returns of the WKW set, I have only some scratches on my discs.

The Fellini boxset format was pretty practical too. If you have any records or laser discs it fits right with them on that type of shelf.

That set warranted the size. I still don't prefer the sliding disc slots, but the sheer amount of discs and the actual book make it feel right.
