Huge Welles fan here, and not sure I entirely agree. There’s always been this pervasive perception that Welles abandons his films, has completion anxiety, etc. I think it’s more a combination of Welles constantly having so many things he’s working on or pursuing at the same time, butting heads with the studios that led to the majority of his studio films being taken away from him and being heavily compromised, and difficulty in getting funding for his independent projects.

I’m not as familiar with Huston, but I understand that he didn’t face the same types and degree of challenges as Welles did. So if Huston did have the more consistent body of work, I don’t know how much of a comment that is on either Huston’s or Welles’ abilities or talents as a filmmaker. Huston certainly had more commercial success than Welles did.

Welles and Huston were just different directors. Both were serious artists and painted in their free time but I think Welles took his directing shores more seriously than Huston. Welles could've directed stuff like Annie too, he was apparently offered Popeye, but chose to be more discreet than with his acting choices. Huston was known to go through the motions on certain films the way Welles would with some of his performances. Sometimes art is work to pay the bills.

There's nothing for me in November but I like the Malcolm X release as well as the The Infernal Affairs Trilogy (despite it not having a 4k release).

I just received Frownland & Daddy Longlegs in the mail and the booklet for the latter is one of the coolest things i've seen for a Criterion booklet in a good while.

And yes, Frownland also got a booklet too rather than a leaflet.

BTW: Just realized I haven't posted my recent Criterion pickups in a while, so here ya go

That's good to hear. Is there inner print for either of them? (Words or pictures)

Just noticed the new "Three Colors" posters via Janus. I love them and wish I could purchase them.

I've been watching Karel Zeman's 3 Fantastic Voyages multiple times lately. I love when movies leave realism behind and go for a more illustrative look like these films do.

Of course, my weak self seems determined to re-buy everything, all the time, and couldn't resist pre-ordering the CC blu ray of "Malcolm X" for November.

I don't have 4K, and already have a perfectly good blu ray release of this movie, but just gotta have that CC blu ray of it (it's a great film).

Just the collector in me...

I was blown away by these wondrous films. So much creativity on display in every frame.

Solaris will be getting a special 50th Anniversary screening at the New York Film Festival, with a live musical accompaniment.

Really love that combined one. Would sure be a nice cover for a 4K box.

Criterion/Janus partners with Posteritati now to sell one-sheet posters. I'm not sure if they have the individual ones, but they are selling the trilogy one. They're not cheap unfortunately.

edit: Sovereign, we both quoted Scottie's post at the same time, how weird is that

Is The Heroic Trio double feature going to be released via Criterion in the future?

Many hope so, but the truth is we don't know for sure. Still, I'd say highly likely.

Not sure where else to post this, since Criterion's the only label that seemingly could potentially release anything Disney/Fox nowadays, but a new 4K DCP of Zoo In Budapest (1933) has shown up on Park Circus recently. The last time as far I can recall that the DCP listings on there were added to was around the time that Nightmare Alley came out, so I'm not sure if this is a sign of anything to come or not.

Who needs old classics like Solaris on 4K when you can buy Netflix 4k classic on physical.
