I'm intrigued by this Wall-E announcement.

Obviously I have a lot of questions like everyone else, so it'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

One thing I'm hoping is that Criterion follows Disney's example and actually provides SDH/CC on the special features. I usually watch every single minute of the bonus features (including audio-commentary) on every Disney release and this is in part thanks to Disney providing SDH on everything. I'm gonna be really ticked off if Criterion skips on this like they do everything else. Especially when the majority of the SDH work has already been done by Disney.

I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion came to Disney asking for this specifically and what resulted instead is a full blown deal.

I'm definitely keeping my eyes/ears peeled for future Disney/Criterion news.

Can’t believe Criterion releasing Wall-E killed The Queen.

Waste of budget and time that could be invested in films that were last issued on DVD!

Oftentimes that is the case yes.

I'm sure Criterion is hoping that this will sell well which could fund other projects.

It'll probably work.

Doesn't mean I'll help, though.

What does the Criterion Wall-E have that the existing Disney 4k disc doesn't? I doubt they're doing a 4k re-render. The only obvious thing is the Criterion has Dolby Vision. Maybe a redo of the DisMos soundtrack, with proper volume?

I won't lie. This Wall-E release sounds like a suggestion that people new to Criterion suggest for the label.

"I really hope Criterion release A24 films"

I'm sure the subreddit is freaking out.

FWIW, Criterion’s email states:

Quote:
We’re proud to announce our first collaboration with Disney and Pixar
And Facebook just says:

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?sto...ibextid=0tlk93

Hope I’m wrong, but I’m getting the impression it’s more of a Pixar deal than a full blown Disney deal. Would LOVE to be wrong though.

I think it's a foot in the door for films that really need the boutique treatment. Though, besides the new exclusive materials - we're at least getting a BD-100 over BD-66, Dolby Vision, lossless stereo in addition to Atmos and 5.1, and no garbage before the movie.

From the Fox catalog, Idiocracy could really use a HD upgrade.

When released, Idiocracy was a comedy. Today, it has become a documentary and society has neared their vision faster than the movie estimated.

I will say that if Criterion (or other boutique labels) get to release more Disney films I do think Disney will be the ones still mostly in charge of what gets released. I don't think we'll see any uncensored version of certain films or films Disney doesn't want released like Song of the South.

Wall-E is perhaps the most extraneous release since All About Eve. However, what is significant here is the possibility that Disney is willing to be open again to licensing to the boutique labels. The Fox catalog alone is awash in titles that desperately need to be released - some that have never been released on DVD not to mention blu-ray or 4K. My fingers are crossed.

We've flooded the Kino Lorber thread with a few pages of suggested titles, should they reach out to Disney.

Holy mother of god, what an ANNOUNCEMENT!

News like this definitely deserves its own announcement day, as opposed to being included alongside the monthly showcase of new titles (that should be announced next Thursday).

But WALL-E? It's actually one of my favorite animated films of all time (albeit digital/computer animation). Mainly because the story is ahead of its time and more timely than ever. This is a movie for everyone including adults of all ages to enjoy and savor. It's an epic morality tale that everyone alive should get to experience... and now it will be available in The Criterion Collection!

Wow, no words.

I LOVE Disney live action films by the way...

So if this is the beginning of a whole bunch of Disney films coming to Criterion, I would love to see Disney's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang come out in UHD, as well as The Black Hole (with extras), and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, as well as Tron, Flight of the Navigator, Never Cry Wolf, Swiss Family Robinson, Davy Crockett, Old Yeller, and Mary Poppins.

And of course let's not forget the greatest Disney movie of them all: The Straight Story !

With their love for Scorsese this is virtually a guarantee if they have the option.

Hopefully with Disney being cool with Criterion releasing their more mainstream titles, I hope Fight Club and The Abyss next.
