Didn't expect Criterion to be releasing a Disney/Pixar film, that's for sure.

What the Disney!

This could be a one off or just one of a few titles, or it could be the start of something bigger. Really hope it's something bigger. The possibilities are massive if it's something bigger!

I’m not getting my hopes up too much. I am a natural born pessimist so maybe Disney is only going to allow Criterion movies that Disney has already released on Blu-ray or 4K. Of course I hope I’m wrong.

Laughable IMO, unless you are looking forward for that 'essay ' they will write about the movie or the extra features that got dropped with 4K upgrade from Disney or created for that release
Disney basically gave them a recycled 4K release just slap Criterion on the title and you might get double dippers ready and willing to buy again.

Hopefully we will get Frozen next

The only reason this release is happening is because my nephew was upset he couldn't find a copy of the original 4K release, so I decided to phone up Jon Mulvaney and told him to start kissing the Mouse's boots.

Now I'll pray every night for a properly restored, supplement-stuffed (4K) Blu-ray of The Color of Money. Who knows? Criterion might be able to get a new Cruise & Scorsese interview for that! (If that happens, don't forget to take another one for your rumored Eyes Wide Shut release!) Of course, a double-feature release with The Hustler would be even better.

...which reminds me of "The Age of Scorsese" article from Harper's Bazaar, Oct, 2011:

Quote:
TOM CRUISE

I met Marty a few years before I worked with him, in '82 in L.A. Then I was shooting Top Gun and he offered me The Color of Money to do with [Paul] Newman.

When we started working together, Marty would just giggle. And it was wonderful because sometimes in the more violent scenes, like when I got pissed and was going down the stairs and throwing down the briefcase, you could just hear him giggle. When Paul and I would go at it, he'd giggle. He'd come up to me and be like, "Hey, kid ..." Newman and Scorsese were like, "Kid, kid, get over here! Kid, listen, in this scene with Mary Elizabeth [Mastrantonio], you gotta smack her around a little more, okay?" Newman and her had, you know, they were flirting, and my character, Vincent, gets very jealous, and Marty's like, "Kid, kid, you gotta rough her up a little bit." We looked at each other and started laughing. And you know, Marty didn't play pool at all. He would watch it and he'd figure out how he wanted to shoot it, but it was always me and Newman.

At night, I'd go down to Marty's parents' room and have a family dinner. His mom Catherine's lemon chicken, the pasta—incredible. Even after we stopped filming, I'd go over to his parents' house and have Italian food any time I'd want. I'd call ahead, and they'd make my favorite dishes, and I'd stay with them for a night.

I always see his movies opening weekend, always. You have to see a Scorsese movie opening weekend. I write him a letter afterward and tell him what I thought of the film, congratulate him, and thank him. When you know him, you're grateful to him, and you're grateful that he's there making movies.

It's not laughable if it leads to never before seen titles on Blu-ray or 4K. THAT is the hope. It might not happen, but the possibility still is there. And that isn't just a matter of movies with "PIXAR" or "Disney" in the name. Getting more classic Fox titles would be fantastic!

Snow White or really any of the early Disney animated films would be VERY Criterion.

I too am interested in what else could come from this. My hope is this leads to a slew of Walt-era and classic Fox titles coming to Blu-ray or 4K.

Since there’s nothing preventing Criterion from tagging or at least mentioning Disney, isn’t this only a Pixar collab? Disney isn’t even mentioned on Criterion’s site.

If it’s only with Pixar, then I would also love Criterion’s for Ratatouille, Up, and Toy Story. If it’s with Disney in general, then I would want:

The Straight Story
TRON and TRON: Legacy
Mary Poppins
Pinocchio (1940)
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
The Lion King (1994)
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl + Dead Man’s Chest + At World’s End
The Sound of Music
What About Bob?
Mr. Holland’s Opus
Planet of the Apes (1968) and sequels
Star Wars Original Trilogy (theatrical versions)

Also regardless of how it’s stated Disney owns Pixar, I doubt Pixar themselves can just make this decision to license out a film without running it up the Disney ladder. With that being said I have my expectations at bay at the moment. I’m a big Wall-E fan so I am excited to purchase this, but totally get it’s not for everyone. I’m assuming they have a handful of other Pixar titles they’ll release as well since it’s worded as “our first collaboration with Pixar”. I feel like there’s only a few likely candidates mainly Toy Story, Up, Ratatouille and maybe The Incredibles? Everything else seems a bit of a stretch for me but who knows. But hey here’s to hoping this performs well and Disney is impressed and licenses more to criterion and other labels!

It's good that Disney are open to doing deals regarding physical media. I hope it opens the levers for others to access the Fox library.
