I saw that email too, but it does strike me that in all major promotion and contexts Criterion doesn’t mention Disney, potentially the biggest name in the business. From a marketing perspective, a company like Disney would require that tag everywhere. Reads like just Pixar to me, but hopefully that opens some doors.

Me, too. The Verdict (among others) is screaming for a Criterion release.

Personally I don't expect to see any of the animated classic Disney movies end up with Criterion, but I can see them licensing out other Disney movies.

One I'd love to see would be The Count of Monte Cristo (2002).

Surely Lumet deserves a box set too!

I have the barebones club edition, but I'd love to see Criterion sink their teeth into 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Planet of the Apes is/was on the Criterion Channel, so I can see that one happening. Straight Story is also a possibility unless Lynch is playing the waiting game and waiting for the rights to revert back to him (we'll see if the next Lynch title after Inland is Wild at Heart or Straight Story).

As for the rest...MAYBE Mary Poppins because I don't know if Disney will give that one a UHD, but we'll see.

One idea would be a box set of the "First Five" Walt-era features.

New 4K restorations of Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Bambi done like The Sword in the Stone. Perhaps include a remastered The Reluctant Dragon (the version on Blu has random overdone noise reduction), a selection of short cartoons in 4K, multiple cuts and audio mixes for Fantasia, music-only tracks, etc.

A collection of all 75 Silly Symphonies would be neat, too. I think you could probably fit them all onto a 4-disc set with plenty of space for supplements.

Until Disney puts on their Facebook the details of that agreement, all is rumors. If it’s a big deal (no pun intended) we would see some kind of schedule like they did with the Signature collection. If it’s 1 time deal, like this one is shaping to be, it won't be mentioned anywhere other than on Criterion website. Disney has already cashed out by selling the licensing fees to Criterion. If Disney is really opening the licensing floodgates we should see some acknowledgement from Disney example Disney x Criterion or something like that and that has yet to happen.

I’m assuming they have a handful of other Pixar titles they’ll release as well since it’s worded as “our first collaboration with Pixar”. I feel like there’s only a few likely candidates mainly Toy Story, Up, Ratatouille and maybe The Incredibles? Everything else seems a bit of a stretch for me but who knows. But hey here’s to hoping this performs well and Disney is impressed and licenses more to criterion and other labels!
WALL-E is going to sell a ton of units. Criterion / Pixar-Disney most likely will select more titles in the future.

Why? I'd have thought that most anybody that's interested in 4k Wall-E will have already bought the 4k Disney disc.

Dude, c'mon. It's painfully obvious to everyone that this is going to sell like hotcakes.

I'd rebuy pretty much all of the DMC exclusives for a better transfer and any bonus features...

Of course it's going to sell like hot cakes: Disney released a flawless 4k 2 years ago that is still in production which means it will compete against Criterion. Criterion dropped French and Spanish audio and subs so say goodbye to international markets, most of the extras on Criterion were on the bluray that came with Disney 4k bluray minus a commentary and their usual essays. Disney actually isolated the movie to be standalone on the 4K disc while Criterion is packing that 4K disc might create compression problems.

The only plus side Criterion is offering is vanity: a nice cover art slipcover. But will that be enough for people to fork 40$ for it when they can get it with a bluray and digital code for the same or even sometimes half the price.

You do realize that Criterion don't add extras to their 4K discs besides the commentaries, right? It's literally listed on their website as being a 3 disc-set, with the movie and extras being spread along 2 Blu-rays alongside the 4K. Sorry but you must be really naive if you actually think this isn't going sell like crazy. Also, why would they be buying it for $40 when there is a month long sale where it will be priced at $25?

There are a lot of Disney fanatics who want every version of each title.

While that does not apply to me I will prefer this Criterion version because it includes The Pixar Story documentary.

Wall-e 4k is 17.99 on amazon.com as of right now and it can go lower, your Criterion sale min price is 19.99$ when they slash their prices around the holidays. Beware that multiple disc sets like Wall-E by Criterion normally don't benefit that kind of discount while Disney's set does regularly. So it will stay around 40$ with 5 to 10 $ dollars discount at best.

A flawless 4K would have been re-rendered in native 4K with Dolby Vision, a non-Atmouse soundtrack, and a 100GB disc.

Of those only Dolby Vision has been announced by Criterion, which is a nice but hardly essential upgrade. A 100GB disc isn’t so hot if, as you say, the extra space isn’t being used to improve compression on the main feature. I think we can dismiss a re-render out of hand, so that just leaves the soundtrack as the real, if it happens, upgrade Criterion is giving us (in my opinion). Wall-E is no Black Hawk Down in terms of soundtrack dynamics, so I have yet to be convinced this is a worthwhile purchase if, like me, you already have the Disney disc.
