I love Wall-E but frankly I’m much more interested in Criterion working on upgrading what they already have. So many DVDs……….

Criterion would be perfect to put SOTS in context with extras but I don’t see them going anywhere near it unless some prominent black artists push for it. Maybe 5 or ten years ago but not now.

I recall years ago they had something like a focus group that consisted of prominent individuals and the answer was ‘absolutely not.’ That was around 10 years ago, but my ability to recall time frames accurately have diminished. That being said, I agree with classic Walt and there are some pretty deep items in their vault, but I think this is really about Fox titles. Imagine a Criterion of Patton, for example. Also substantial Searchlight titles. Again, this is a test. It is only a test.

Thought I would post this here. A friend of mine recently asked somone at Warner Home Video if there was a release of Risky Business 4K planned.

They were told that it would likely go to 4K but there isn't any immediate plans. The 25th anniversary edition sold poorly, so it wouldn't be at the top of any list.

Mix of good and bad news in there. Risky Business would look so good in 4K. Surely after the success of Top Gun: Maverick, it is a no brainer to get more Tom Cruise out on 4K?

They also asked if there was a release of After Hours was planned for Blu Ray or 4K.

They said that it is currently NOT planned and they would be surprised if it got a 4K release. It was never a good seller and there's no real aesthetic bump in taking it to 4K but you never know.

Not the most encouraging news.

(This is why the galaxy brain idea is to find a way to convince Cameron that he must help Michael Mann complete a director's cut of The Keep, because somehow Cameron will somehow come up with the money and make it happen.)
And I do think that will take years since Cameron is currently filming Avatar 4.

Do you have insider connections? I only ask because you keep mentioning Wall-E is a test release.

I'm a bit stunned by some calls for re-releases of 4K animated titles Disney's already released on the UHD market. If there is a potential of a possible deal with Disney then let's get titles locked away in the Touchstone/Fox vaults out on blu that haven't had releases.

If it's the UHD market let's get some remastered titles then. We know titles like Patton and Butch and Sundance have HDR masters ready to go. Let's get remastered titles like Cronbergs The Fly or Altmans M.A.S.H.

How about Pretty Women of Good Morning, Vietnam?

I sure as hell wouldn't want re-releases of Lion King or Toy Story.

It's such a shame to hear about Risky Business and After Hours not selling well, especially in the case of Risky Business, considering that actually had a blu-ray release. I honestly think it's one of the best movies of the '80s, and it's quite revered, so it just sounds insane to me that it wasn't a big seller for WB. Not that I don't believe it, but I could've sworn that would've been a profitable title for them.

I really hope Risky Business gets a UHD as the blu-ray transfer is showing its age, and with regards to After Hours, sure maybe the DVD didn't sell particularly well 18 years ago, but that title seems to get requested so often now that I can't imagine it not selling well for WAC or something if they were to put it out on blu-ray. Surely one of Scorsese's best movies from the '80s won't forever be relegated to a bloody DVD. It's 2022, come on.

I just realized there's a decent amount of Altman films stuck in a vault during the Disney-Fox merger. They could do a nice box set of those.

This!

Tom Cruise is hot property. Risky Business is a beautiful, amazingly shot film and it would be criminal for it not to get a 4K UHD. I think it would sell just fine.

Can’t add much more to After Hours. Never thought I would still have to pull out the DVD to watch it in 2022.

An Altman at Fox Boxset would be a dream release for me!

I actually bought and received this poster before this post but I didn't have time until today to hang it up lol. Regardless, this poster is a thing of beauty and I'm really glad I bought it (even if it was a bit pricey).

I also had the privilege of revisiting the trilogy for the third time in theaters just recently and I'm so glad that I did. Each film examines grief and the need to rejoin society after a terrible tragedy, love and revenge in a satirical look of the capitalist society in post-communist Poland, and the unexplainable connection that we have to one another (whether it be in-person or through technology via the phone). All of this is expertly wrapped by Kieslowski with compassion and humanism, which helps make this trilogy to be one of the most emotionally profound films I have ever seen. Even though I may have seen this trilogy thrice, I will happily pick this up and watch it for a fourth time when Criterion decides to upgrade it to 4K.
