I also had the privilege of revisiting the trilogy for the third time in theaters just recently and I'm so glad that I did. Each film examines grief and the need to rejoin society after a terrible tragedy, love and revenge in a satirical look of the capitalist society in post-communist Poland, and the unexplainable connection that we have to one another (whether it be in-person or through technology via the phone). All of this is expertly wrapped by Kieslowski with compassion and humanism, which helps make this trilogy to be one of the most emotionally profound films I have ever seen. Even though I may have seen this trilogy thrice, I will happily pick this up and watch it for a fourth time when Criterion decides to upgrade it to 4K.
Man, that thing is gorgeous. I may need to purchase it. If I recall correctly, I have reproduced versions of the original posters somewhere in my house.

I really want every World of Wong Kar-wai poster from the retrospective. Ugh.

You're lucky that you got a reproduced versions, though I will also recommend getting this poster as well since it looks so beautiful. I was actually hoping to get a copy of the Japanese theatrical poster but they didn't have it in stock and it would cost around $600-$900 USD if they were to have it in stock:

I wonder if some people are reluctant to see some of Godard's early work because his later films have the reputation for being inaccessible and he himself recently had the reputation for being a curmudgeon.

His work in the 60's along with other early French New Wave films still feels fresh today. The films are endlessly innovative and fun.

I'm a little surprised that not much of anything has been said about Godard here. I thought there'd be a few pages of tributes, favorite films lists, or whatever.

I thought this was an awesome video essay on the French New Wave. If you've thought that some of these films would be over your head or just not your thing, you may reconsider after seeing this. It succinctly explains what was so great about these films and when considering the French New Wave, Godard is king.

New October/November schedule posted for the Film Forum. Lots of interesting stuff including a series on Taiwan's New wave, and a Isabelle Hupert retrospective with over 25 films. As far as Janus/Criterion goes, they will be showing Paris, Texas from the new 4K restoration. Possibly a good sign of 4K release coming next year.

Really hoping Criterion releases Dersu Uzula at some point and after seeing this clip I can tell why it's taking them so long.

https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=31325

Master seems to be a very old one, so who knows what Criterion is doing with this and if they have restored, but hoping we can get something a little better than this for such an important film. Not sure if this is how it will look like with the final product, but it seems to be DVD quality master.

Isn't it really expensive to scan 65 & 70 mm film? I figure that's a big hurdle for them.

It probably is, and I know they have been working on it for years, but there hasn't been any mention of it for awhile, so who knows how far along they are, or if they have already finished.

By the look of things I'm not expecting any more Kurosawa until they do a box. What has it been since Dreams, 6 years? They still have about 5 or so plus the earlier Kurosawa films (Sugata Sanshiro, Men Who tread on Tiger's Tail etc) to release.

A boxset would be amazing, but at this point who knows when it will happen. I would like to believe they are working on it, but when it comes to Criterion you usually can't expect the expected.

I think it will be long time before we will hear anything about it.
Since it was USSR/Japan co-production - some rights are still owned by Mosfilm, and given the sanctions I wouldn't hope that American company will pay to russia, more - to state owned company.

Thank you for that video. However, and maybe I am wrong, but I am sure I have seen those same techniques done much earlier - even in some silents. I didn't see anything in that video that I haven't seen done before the 1960's.

The rights in the US are with Criterion and have been for awhile. It's currently streaming on their channel I believe. I think the issue is access to the film elements, the condition of those elements, and restoration costs. We know Criterion was restoring it years ago, but it's been radio silence since the last time Lee Kline mentioned it.

The fact they haven't re-released any Kurosawa and having rights to some pretty fantastic films that need a blu/4K, it feels like a box is imminent.

Well, it's time to start taking bets.

Not on what Criterion will release in December ("Cooley High" is apparently among them), but rather on if they will actually announce them tomorrow or not....
