I take it as "try as one may, the 4K ain't happening."

It's so tempting to grab Criterions off Amazon.com right now, since they price match B&N (who don't ship to Canada, unfortunately). There are a few recent titles that I didn't end up grabbing during the flash sale that I might just happen to pick up this month. I've been eyeing Summertime, The Tales of Hoffman, Devil in a Blue Dress, The Virgin Suicides and Arsenic & Old Lace.

Boycotting Amazon is generally a mug's game, since it's frankly the only option for intercontinental imports, not that Canada's on a different continent.

The QC issues do seem more noticeable with Criterion than with other North American-pressed UHDs though. I bought the North American UHDs of Phantom Thread and Suspiria a couple months ago, and the discs looked visibly fine.

Not really a fair comparison since both of those discs have been out for a while and the versions you got were likely pressed years ago, while the QC issues are happening with newer pressed discs.

Where does he say anywhere in his post that he's "boycotting" Amazon?

As someone already mentioned, those are older discs. And if you were actually paying attention to things like the Columbia Classics Volume 3 thread or any number of Shout Factory threads you will see tons of posts from people who have been receiving scratched discs.

Andrew Stanton confirms that there is no partnership between Criterion and Disney, and that he had reached out to Criterion first to release WALL-E.

Glad he’s made that clear. I’m sad that I have to drop my hopes for Fantasia, but it’s good to know that Pixar’s directors have this level of agency with their works

I’m sure there'll be more if this sells well. Remember how Criterion didn’t have any WB titles during the Blu-ray era until Terrence Malick demanded them to let Criterion have Badlands?

Wow.

I had been hearing all the complaints about scratches on Criterion discs lately, but I'd been lucky and hadn't experieced it.

I bought 4 titles at B&N yesterday, all fairly recent releases:

Le Corbeau
Exotica
Summertime
Le Cercle Rouge UHD

3 of the 4 (all but Le Cercle Rouge) had hairline scratches all over the back.

I'm torn now.

I hate to try and replace three discs at B&N, but the scratches may affect play. They'll also make the discs very difficult to resell later. (Criterions tend to hold their value more than any other discs).

Such a shame their QC seems to have vanished.

It's a Mexican replication plant that is the problem. It is affecting Shout Factory's releases and I'm sure many others as well. This isn't a Criterion specific issue, and unfortunately there's probably not much they can do to improve the working conditions in Mexico.

Picked up 4 months 3 weeks 2 days, Take Out, Cure, and Sound of Metal 4K at my Barnes and Noble today. Hopefully they’ll be good!

Ironically, I'm a bit relieved that this is the case.

When it comes to Disney releases, I usually watch 100% of their supplemental features. This is largely thanks to them adding SDH to everything.

Criterion doesn't add any SDH to their extra features, which makes buying their version pointless for me.

If they get enough customer comments, is it realistic to think they might switch to the German replication plant Paramount uses?

I think someone said those are the only two left, right?

That may be so but Stanton doesn't own the film outright - Disney still had final say. It may be a one-off but this could open doors.

Yes, but one can still assume a copy purchased two months ago was from a relatively recent pressing and therefore still affected by QC issues. The original street date of a release is not the important barometer here.

It absolutely is an important point to take into consideration, especially when you had decided to compare the QC issues of recently released discs against discs that were released a while ago. Someone else also mentioned that these issues were happening with Shout Factory and Sony but you conveniently chose to not address that.

I think you're getting unnecessarily combative here. I had no intention of denying other people's experiences, and I'm aware of the Shout Factory issues, but I was also aware some labels seem to be more heavily affected by the scratch issue than others, and I'm sorry, but it's hardly a stretch to assume a disc I purchased new less than two months ago is from a recent pressing and so could be affected. Even ten year old Criterion releases have re-pressings at the Mexican plant nowadays. In either case, I apologize if I came off as insensitive, since it wasn't my intention to deny other people's reality and experience.

I've been responding to your points in a calm and collected manner, so I have no idea where this "combative"-ness is coming from (unless this is an attempt to paint me in an unpleasant light simply because I called out the inconsistency of logic in your points).

Anyways, are there any Canadians on here who can tell me what's the best place to buy Criterions from during this sale? I was going to go with Unobstructed View but the sale on there is now 35% off, which isn't really appealing.
