Don't know what the issue is, but since I only buy from B&N during these sales, I guess I won't be buying online from them any more.

Thanks everyone. I use Mozilla Firefox and DuckDuckGo (WOO!) but keep my Microsoft Edge just in case I have to uninstall and reinstall Mozilla. And lo and behold, it was a Firefox issue. I used Edge instead, which I never ever ever do, and it went through smoothly. I ordered from the July sale with my Firefox so one of the updates since then must have been anti-Barnes and Noble.

So my two BD haul was:

I added a book marker to get over the $40 free shipping. It's good to also be an avid reader at times like this.

There was a time when it looked like we’d be getting a fairly steady release of Harold Lloyd titles from Criterion. I wonder what happened.

I know, right? With the four films they've already released I was thinking we'd at least get Grandma's Boy and Why Worry? with more shorts included but then nothing. Fingers crossed that maybe they'll be more Lloyd films from Criterion in the future.

There was a time several years back when I would complain monthly about the lack of Lloyd releases from Criterion. I stopped for several reasons:
1. It was pointless. Criterion simply does what it wants to do.
2. I realized myself how whiny I sounded. Course correction started.

That said, we got three Lloyd releases out between 2013 and 2015 (Safety Last, The Freshman, and Speedy). Then we got The Kid Brother a few years later in 2019, and nothing since then. Is that because of Criterion's habit of sitting on licenses? Perhaps. Maybe the Harold Lloyd trust isn't as active in producing new HD masters? Who knows, but me being mouthy on the matter isn't productive. Que sera, sera.

Suzanne Lloyd Hayes did mention that a Lloyd talkies set was in the works, and I do recall seeing a TCM airing of Movie Crazy being preceded by a new Criterion logo. I also seem to remember hearing of a new restoration of Why Worry? touring with a new Carl Davis score. A few glimmers of some activity perhaps, and I'll keep my fingers crossed as well. In the meantime, I still have my Lloyd DVDs.

Damn, any Carl Davis score is a winner, hopefully we get that version soon from Criterion. I've also been dying for more Harold, i've only seen the ones Criterion have released and loved them all. I forgot how long it had been. Same problem with Chaplin, we still haven't gotten the shorts they own from First national on blu ray yet unfortunately.

Is it just me or is the scratch ratio for Criterion like 80%+ of their discs? Last 3 copies of Lost Highway scratched (kept the last one was less scratched)...just got 2 In today (Cat People, Island of Lost Souls) both scratched (esp CP). So at this point the key is to get a less scratched disc at best from this company. I thought they were considered a classy label..

As was pointed out numerous times before, the problem lies with the replication plant in Mexico. Criterion don't press their own discs.

To be clear, I'm not sure if the Davis score for Why Worry? has been recorded. While I was a little underwhelmed with Davis' score for The Freshman, I think his scores for Safety Last, The Kid Brother, and Speedy are some of the finest ever recorded for silent films. As for the Chaplin First National shorts, it does not surprise me that they haven't been released yet given that the late David Shepard referred to them as the problem films of the Association Chaplin catalog. It's a very fascinating editorial history, but to give a tldr summary - what we see today are 1940s reconstructions that were further revised by Chaplin in the 1950s and 1960s. They're not precisely what audiences saw in the teens and twenties. It will be interesting to see if Criterion will put out reconstructions from archival sources or if Association Chaplin will insist upon the "daddy versions."

I may be lucky, but I haven't had a single scratched disk so far, barring irrc one tiny mark on a BD in one of the UHD sets (and therefore not an issue to me). I'd say it was just as well considering I am in the UK, but on the other hand if any disk were to have problems, no matter when that happens, I am safe in the knowledge Criterion will fix it for me. Which is more than you can say for almost any other company out there (that's you I'm looking at, Potemkine and your Rohmer set).

I didn't order these from B&N but took advantage of Amazon's already low Criterion prices being brought down even lower on some items (this eclipse set was a steal at 50% off).

Wow. Having a defective disc without recourse for a big expensive limited edition box like the Potemkine Complete Rohmer set would just drive me crazy. I know, it's small consolation, but at least it's dual format (blu-ray + DVD), so you have at least something to watch.

Spot on - I had to continue with the DVD, which was a noticeable step down in PQ, but at least I got to finish it (Conte d'Ete - praying that either Arrow or Criterion do a Four Seasons set sometime).
